Onderwijsdag/Education Day 15 oktober 2013 Public space around Utrecht station Civil Engineering, Annet de Kiewit 15-10-2014
Civil Engineering Civil Engineering is about infrastructure and public works Civil Engineering in Twente does not focus only technical but also non-technical aspects (so, the structure within its environment) it is always about complex adaptive systems it is hardly impossible to think of fake cases with enough complexity without having to develop all background material yourself always interaction with the work field (if only by using data) 2 15-10-2014
B3-project Civil Engineering-background info ‘Old’ BSc-programme, so no TOM 3rd year BSc, 3rd quartile, last group project before individual BSc-thesis Requirements (based on learning objectives): Multi-disciplinary: water/traffic/construction and technical/non-technical --> themes (usually 4) Integration and application of prior knowledge (almost all technical and subset of non-technical courses), if necessary knowledge enhancement Students act as a professional consultancy agency --> client should be ‘’fuzzy’’ 3 15-10-2014
B3-project Civil Engineering-background info Bounderies: 8 EC Expertise teaching staff project: coordinator, expert per theme (at the moment no civil engineers in staff and only one designer) No tutors Project rooms available Organisation One start-up class One or two classes per theme Three feedback moments Supervision on request by teaching staff Final report and postermarkt base for grade, group grade 4 15-10-2014
B3-project Civil Engineering-example cases Schiphol in zee/Schiphol at sea Olympische Spelen in Nederland/Olympic Games in Netherlands Inrichting Zuidplaspolder/Planning and development Zuidplaspolder 5 15-10-2014
B3-project Civil Engineering-Utrecht Wish from majority of teaching staff: case in densily populated and/or built environment --> Utrecht was mentioned as a possibility Alumnus Robert Oosterwegel contacted me in November 2011 based on Olympic Games-case: he happens to work for POS, the project organization of Utrecht municipality in charge of all projects around Utrecht station At the moment we are running the case for the first time...... ‘’Inrichting openbare ruimte rondom Station Utrecht als ruimtelijke uitdaging’’ 6 15-10-2014
B3-project Civil Engineering-contact with Utrecht Development of case 3 meetings with Robert in Utrecht Involvement of water expert IBU (IngenieursBureau Utrecht) 1 site visit Annet 2 meetings teaching staff Many, many emails in order to develop project manual and background material Running of the case Excursion in week 1 ‘’Intervention’’ in week 7 No role in supervision or grading 7 15-10-2014
B3-project Civil Engineering-Attention points Company contacts are usually very enthusiastic but: Not focused on achieving ‘’our’’ learning objectives Tend to overestimate their available time (and we sometimes are also too busy :-( to give them necessary attention) Usually you can use all (public) available data/information but: Be very careful in describing scope and bounderies of the student project--> be prepared to make adjustments ‘’on the fly’’ Make sure that all data/information they need is available and make ‘’own’’ versions if necessary but also make sure that ‘’the solution’’ is not available Make sure that your guest speakers etc. know your scope or be prepared for a ‘’reality’’-clash 8 15-10-2014
