  1. Operating System Software and System Development ™ Application Program Graphical User Interface (GUI) Systems Development

  2. Operating System • The Operating System is a type of Windows that controls the memory and hardware of the computer. • The Operating System allows you to use the advanced features of a modern computer without having such problems and having to learn all the details of how the hardware works.

  3. There are different types of Operating System. • The first Operating System was the MS-DOS.

  4. After the MS-DOS, Windows were invented. There are many types of Windows that are:- • Windows 386 • Windows NT • Windows ME • Windows 97 • Windows 3.11 • Windows 286 • Windows XP (Professional) • Windows XP (Home) • Windows 2000 (Professional) • Windows 2000 (Server) • Windows 98 • Windows 96 • Windows 95 • Windows 3.1

  5. Why are newer versions of software released year after year? Newer versions are released, with an updated and newer feature more than the previous one. The main feature is that less bugs will enter your personal computer.

  6. Application Program An application Program is a type of program that you use once the operating system has been loaded.

  7. Word Processing (Microsoft Word) A word processing program allows you to easily produce letters, memorandums, invitations, use mail merge, ect. • Spreadsheets (Microsoft Excel) • Presentation (Microsoft Power Point) • Databases (Microsoft Access) • Web Browsing (Internet Explorer) A database program allows you to compile information and then to search this information to extract just the information you require. You can easily produce a report listing all the details that you desire. A presentation program allows you to produce professional looking presentations, which can be displayed automatically into an overhead projector This application allows you to view and interact with the World Wide Web – www. A spreadsheet program allows you to keep an account (of a shop or your own home).

  8. Graphical User Interface - GUI A Graphical User Interface is simply an additional part of the operating system that displays windows and drop down menus, and also enables you to drive your computer using a mouse.

  9. Systems Development The System Development is a rather general term used to describe the way new software is specified, computer coded, tested and then delivered to the user.

  10. What is a Systems Development Cycle? A system development cycle is how a program is created. This cycle is divided in five steps.

  11. These were methodologies for defining a systems development cycle. After all this process, users often suggest new improvements and the whole process is started all over again (so users will be satisfied). • Programming • Design • Testing • Implementation • Analysis The needs of the computer users must be analyzed. This task is often performed by a professional Systems Analysts who will ask the users exactly what they would like the system to do. The Programmer will take the specifications from the System Analysts and then convert the board ideas into actual computer programs. Testing an Input from the users so that what is produced by the programmers is actually what they asked for. The System Analysts will then draw up plans on how the needs can be implemented on a real, computer based, system. During this process all users are introduced to the new system, which often involves an element of training.
