  1. Written Addition and Subtraction tom

  2. Addition • Step 1: Read the question – TWICE • Step2: Organise the numbers into the correct columns. The numbers should be organised into units, tens, hundreds etc. See the table below for for 100 + 10 • Step 3: Start by adding together the Unit column. • In this case 0+0 = 0 • Now move to the Ten’s column – 0+1=1 • Finally complete the Hundreds . As there are no hundreds in the second number we treat this as a 0 – 1+0=1 • Step 4: The answer should be written in the same U,T,H order

  3. Addition – Carrying OVER • Carrying over happens when the n umbers added together equal more than 10. When this happens there is a strict rule on what to do. • Step 1: Read the question – TWICE • Step2: Organise the numbers into the correct columns. The numbers should be organised into units, tens, hundreds etc. See the table below for 105+6 • Step 3: Start by adding together the Unit column. • In this case 5+6 = 11. This answer is more than 10. The Unit part is left in the Unit answer box and the Ten part is added to the Ten column. • Now move to the Ten’s column. This started off as 0+0 but has now become 0+1 due to the carry over – 0+1=1 • Finally complete the Hundreds . There is no carry over here so the sum stays– 1+0=1 • Step 4: The answer should be written in the same U,T,H order
