(LHWMP) Program Partners • 37 Suburban Cities in King County • King County Water & Land Resources • Public Health--Seattle & King County • Seattle Public Utilities • King County Solid Waste
Why Did We Pilot A Multifamily Collection? • LHWMP conducted a study in 2006 to assess its Household Hazardous Waste (HHW) collection services • Among the outcomes was explore ways to increase use of Program HHW collection services by multifamily residents
What Do We Know About Multifamily HHW? • Residents living in multifamily dwellings use the HHW collection services far less than would be expected based on demographic and housing.
Not sure but we decided to implement a multifamily pilot collection to see if there is a need for expanded efforts Assumption that having multifamily collections would help under served communities Is There A Need For Multifamily Collection?
Multifamily Pilot Collection Considerations • What Kind Of Collection Staffed or unstaffed Container types • Where Will The Collection Be Identify an apartment complex with a suitable layout and property management support Area of the County with demographics of targeted underserved residents • Duration of the Collection • Collection logistics Set up Location in the complex
What Did It Cost Us? • Charged for Time and Materials Two staff for 24 hours (3 days) Equipment Vehicle • Total Cost = $3,200
What Does It All Mean? • May confirm assumption that HHW is generated by single family homes • Multifamily residents don’t have very much HHW Smaller foot prints Limited storage No yards • Many multifamily units provide only garbage receptacles leading to disposing of HHW as garbage • Limited information available to residents on what is hazardous and how to properly dispose
