  1. Types, Working and Applications of Internal Combustion Engines

  2. Based on cycles they follow IC engines can be classified into: • Diesel Engine • Gasoline Engine Each of these are again classified into: • 4-Stroke-Engine • 2-Stroke Engine

  3. Petrol Engine Petrol Engine are also called as spark Ignition (SI) engines because it requires ignition from an external source for its operation.Piston goes to the top of the cylinder and sparking plug fires. This spark powers air-fuel mixture and causes mini explosion. As soon as the fuel burns it releases hot gas that pushes the piston back to the down. It releases energy which gives power to the crankshaft.

  4. Diesel engine It converts chemical energy of the fuel to mechanical energy and causes reciprocating motion inside the cylinders. It does not require any external spark for its operation.

  5. Applications • IC engines are used for mobile propulsion in automobiles, equipment, and other portable machinery. • These are also used in automobiles, motorcycles, boats, and in a wide variety of aircraft and locomotives which demands very high power, such as jet aircraft, helicopters, and large ships. • They are also used in generators .
