  1. The view of a CIBSE President. Rob Manning

  2. Drawing and Manufacture Concept Design Production Design Construction Commissioning and Handover Post Handover Operation Sales Briefing

  3. Lack of communication amongst stakeholders • Silos of information • Inherent design process model that exist today does not reward sharing of information • Limiting information to avoid risk • Conflicting goals amongst stakeholders • Difficult to coordinate paper documentation • Varied interpretation of “BIM” amongst all stakeholders fueling confusion within the market sectors and driving inconsistent expectations. • Existing terms do not facilitate collaboration • Lack of trust from the supply chain • Difficult to deliver low energy and low carbon. Knowledge Design Procure Build Manage Interoperability issues and inadequate information sharing between project stakeholders leads to excessive waste within the industry.

  4. Government funded construction; • Quicker build times • Lower whole life cost • Less energy demand (less generation capacity to fund, lower operating expenditure)

  7. The IGT Report mentions a contractor to lead. • That contractor can come from; • Clients • Construction Companies • Service Providers • Large multi-disciplinary PMCM/Design companies

  13. Why should we pay the cost of change • Education? • Training? • Software? • Will it increase turnover and profit for us? • Why have the arguments with the legal and insurance industries? • Let us see that the government means it this time

  14. Understanding the MEP design process and the interfaces with other designers. • Guidance on the integrated working approach. • Identifying how decisions about energy, carbon dioxide and water arise at stages of budget setting, design, procurement, construction, commissioning and operation. • National object library • Guidance on software

  15. Reviewing the current process of MEP budget setting, designing, pricing, constructing and operating to look for improvements in information exchange.

  16. Institutions can play their part; • Work with universities to promote principles of integrated working, BIM and low carbon. • Promoting post-graduate courses on integrated working and cross-disciplinary awareness. • CIBSE can work with Engineering Council to promote integrated working, BIM and low carbon as part of the EC UK competences.

  17. Companies and institutions can work with government to deal with; • Contractual accountability for BIM. • Legal framework such that accountability/responsibility for BIM is managed, without becoming a barrier to implementation? • Contracts to require post handover measurement of performance including energy, carbon and water. • Design appointments to require new outputs.

  18. Design and Construction Direct Costs OtherDirectCosts Incentive Elements: 1 - On Budget 2 – Energy, carbon and water objectives 3 - On time 4 - Required Quality Incentives 2 4 1 3 Total Project Cost
