The Quantum Glass Transition in LiHoxY1-xF4 Ka Yee C. Lee, University of Chicago, DMR 0820054 Research on spin glasses has led to deep insights into disordered materials and the glassy state. The LiHoxY1-xF4 family of materials (depicted above) represents the simplest quantum spin model, the Ising magnet in a transverse field. Rosenbaum and colleagues at the University of Chicago MRSEC measured the nonlinear magnetic susceptibility of this system and observed a spin-glass transition in the presence of entangled spins. In the high-field regime, where quantum fluctuations play a major role, the presence of entangled spin clusters slow the effective timescales for the tunneling processes that dominate the quantum dynamics. Work made possible through the NSF MRSEC program, DMR-0213745.
