Iran and Persia • The area that is present day Iran was the location of the ancient Persian Empire. • It was given this name by the ancient Greeks • For a long time this area was known as Persia • In 1935 the Reza Shah asked for the country to be formally called Iran • The name Persia is now commonly used to describe the art, language, and culture
Iranian Art: Pre-revolution • The arts and culture were encouraged and promoted by Iranian leaders. • Classic Persian artwork and music were common, but modern art was increasing in popularity • The film industry grew • Pop music was also popular in the 1970s • Many of these were younger artists
Iranian Art:Post-revolution • Islamic leaders had more restrictions on free expression • Music and depictions of human and animals are not encouraged by religious authorities • Musicians and other Iranian artists live in other countries because of these restrictions • Traditional Persian art is still accepted • Free expression is very limited
Impact of Iranian Art • Persian music has become popular internationally • Artists who have moved out of Iran are benefiting from this • Many Iranian artists and musicians who are limited in Iran have come to America to perform • Because of a demand for free expression recently, some of the rules have relaxed • There are many art galleries in Iran that attract tourists
