Please put in as much effort as possible.

Transnational issues: the flow of people QUESTION 1 [30] If a tourist faces culture shock while staying at his or her destination, which four phases of culture shock would he or she possibly go through? 1.1 Name and discuss these stages. (10) Guidelines on how to answer this question: • Here you are expected to identify and discuss the four phases of cultural shock which are: 1) honeymoon phase, 2) the frustration phase, 3) the adjustment phase and 4) the acceptance phase. • Use examples to illustrate your discussion.

(10) Guidelines on how to answer this question: • Here you may consider the adjustment and acceptance phases of culture shock. These phases are key towards overcoming culture shock in foreign lands or environment. • You are encouraged to think about other factors that contribute towards overcoming culture shock in foreign lands.

State any five reasons of why people migrate from one country to another and provide a real life scenario or example of each reason that you have mentioned. (10) Guidelines on how to answer this question: • Here you need to think about different “pull” and “push” factors that lead people to abandon their home countries. • You are also expected to illustrate with practical examples both here in South Africa and abroad. Think about recent migration crises: the European Union migration, Africans in the Sahara desert, the Rohingya people in Myanmar.

International flow of news QUESTION 2 [60] You are hypothetically employed at a media corporation (choose which one: CNN, E-TV, SABC, 702, Reuters News Agency, Xinhua News Agency, BBC International, Bloomberg or any other ‘news’ company you like or wish to be working for. You have a role as a management executive who has recently graduated in international communication; you are quickly entrusted to develop an informative portfolio detailing the flow of international news in this company. In this portfolio report, advise on selection processes and factors influencing media coverage of specific international news and report on the current global news flow patterns.

(10) Guidelines on how to answer this question: Choose one media organization you are hypothetically employed in. Select five stories from this organization. Write a summary about: company profile (company background, ownership, international news reporting in this company)

(10) Guidelines on how to answer this question: • Read the study guide p140-156; Understand the theories of international news flow: Theory of structuralism and systems theory, Mordenisation theory and diffusions of innovations theory, the dependency theory, Media framing theory. • Discuss how news flow in the organization you have selected, by referring to the theories. Practical application of theories.

(5) Guidelines on how to answer this question: • Read and understand Structural imperialism theory. • Explain how and why the position of the country, influences the coverage of international news. (Centre/periphery; North/South; Triangular flow between East, West and South)

(5) Guidelines on how to answer this question: • Read and understand Social, cultural proximity; and role of language translation in international news. • Apply theory about language to the company that you have chosen.

International flow of news 2.5 Factors influencing international flow of news (News related and none news related). i.e How news flows in and out of this company and mention other aspects you have found as playing a crucial role in how international news is reported in this TV channel or other media. Give examples of those factors from the selected 5 news items analysed. (20) Guidelines on how to answer this question: • Read and understand factors influencing news flow. Context related and news related factors. • Give examples from the five selected news items. State which factors are found in which news items.

In addition, describe the role of global news agencies in this company including the relationship of this company with the global news agencies.
