  3. All About the Qu’ran Draw an image of the Qu’ran. Choose 7 facts and add them around your drawing. **Which facts are the most surprising ? Why ? Verses written in Mecca are mostly about Allah’s oneness: TAWHID. Written as poetry, in verses (=Surah). There is no story line – no real beginning, middle or end. written down in Arabic 20 years after Muhammad’s death - in only one version. It is made up of the messages Mohammad received from the angel Jibril for 22 years. • Verses that were written in Medina give LAWS about how Muslims must live • It is made up of 114 chapters, written either in Mecca or Medina. • It is memorized from cover-to-cover in Arabic by millions of people, even if they don’t speak Arabic Qu’ran means “the collection” The Qu’ran is not written in the same order in which the messages were given. Moses and Jesus are mentioned more often than Muhammad. It is considered a “miraculous” book, the like of which no human being could ever write The Qu’ran must not be changed. Translated versions are not a “proper” Qu’ran.

  4. True or False ? Cave where Mohammed received his first message • Written in Hebrew • Only Arabic versions are the real Qu’ran • Dictated by Allah • written in poetry • written in the order Muhammad* heard it in. • Moses and Jesus are not mentioned very often • There are many different versions of the Qu’ran

  5. What do you think the angel’s messages were about? 1. Explain what the 3 most important topics in the Qu’ran might be and why. 2. Explain 2 opinions about how come the same stories are in the Qu’ranas in the Bible. 3. Which opinion do you agree with? Why? **Why is there is more in the Qu’ran about Moses and Jesus than Muhammad himself? about Allah being Tawhid (one, unique) about the end times/ Last Judgement Laws about how to live Words and stories about Bible prophets egJesus, Moses Descriptions of what happened during Muhammad’s life Criticisms of Jewish and Christian beliefs The Bible is a collection of God’s dealings with the Jewish people over thousands of years. The last book of the bible was written about 500 years before Muhammad was born. Muhammad* was a trader before he heard the angel’s messages. Some say that the Qu’ran is not just the messages of the angel, but also what Muhammad learnt from talking to many Christians and Jews when he was mixing with them as a trader, and that is why so many Bible stories are found in the Qu’ran. Muslims disagree. They say that the Angel Jibril told Muhammad the correct version of all that really happened over these thousands of years.

  6. Innappropriate treatment of the Qu’ran by US forces is angering Muslims and inciting them to violence against US troops in Afghanistan.

  7. 1. Unscramble the Rules about Handling a Qu’ran for Troops. Write them out. **Why do you think Muslims show so much respect for the Qu’ran ? 2. Illustrate your “Etiquette” with arabic writing ! U.S. Troops’ Guide on How to Handle a Qu’ran • Ø Muslims must wash before touching a Qu’ran. • Ø Qur’ans must not be taken to toilet areas. • Ø Always hold a Qur’an above the lap or waist. • Ø Cover with a dustcover when not in use. • Ø Muslims will keep Qur’an texts on the highest bookcase shelf. • Ø Place nothing on top of the Qur’an. • Ø Keep the Qur’ans off the floor.
