  3. John Locke • English philosopher • Published Two Treatises of Government • State of Nature • No government • No laws • What would people seek in a state of nature? • Life • Liberty • Property • Locke called life, liberty and property- natural rights.

Examining the State of Nature • What is human nature as it relates to the welfare of self and others? • What should be the main purpose of government? • How do people who run government get the right to govern? • What kinds of government should people support and obey? • What kinds of government should people resist?

  5. Founders and Natural Rights • Not man-made • Our rights are based on laws of nature, which were made by God. • No one may take away those rights • Declaration of Independence speaks of “the Laws of Nature and of Nature’s God.”

How can rights be protected? • Social Contract • To get something, you have to give up something • Give up the absolute right to do anything • Everyone receives security that their rights will be protected • Government is better alternative to a state of nature • Purpose of government – protect natural rights
