Phong Trinh Eric Branson Juan Carlos Torres ENERGY CONSERVATION IN THE HOME
Energy Crisis • Rise in prices due to increase in petroleum demand. • 3 crisis up to now: the 1973 oil crisis, the 1979 energy crisis, and the 1990 oil-price hike. • We have depleted 50% of accessible oil, and with current rate of consumption, the remaining oil will be used up by 2040!
Power Alternatives • Solar and wind electric energy.
How to solve the problem? • Decrease the use of oil, fuel, electric energy, and any other power. • Things like switching off the car engine at traffic lights
In the Home? • Regulating the AC to sufficient temperatures. • Turning off the lights when leaving the room and also using compact fluorescent light bulbs. • Turning off power plugs on the TV, turning off computer monitors. • Closing the blinds during the day.
But do people actually do these things? • No. • Either from laziness or just forgetting, people simply do not perform these methods of saving energy. • To be fair, from personal experience, we all waste a lot of energy on a daily basis. • Solution? Home Automation.
Home Automation • No need to remember when everything is done automatically for the user. • Use of automated lights that turn off when you leave the room, also dimming effects to save energy. • Automated blinds that close during the hot day and automated thermostat. • Energy efficient homes can save up to 40% of energy anually.
But do people really care about saving energy? • Yes and no. • Due to improved technology, most home automation systems are very easy to install, user friendly, and most importantly cheap, and the saving energy is just the bonus.
Our Plan • Automated lighting with dimming effect. • Automated blinds.
