  1. 2nd Wave Feminism CH 28

  2. EQ: What were the causes and the impacts of the women’s rights movement in the 1960s and 1970s?

  3. Focus of the movement • 1960 Coffee Commercial • Unlike 1st wave (voting, legal rights), the 2nd wave focused on dissatisfaction w/ working discrimination and domestic life • United white women and women of color • Second Wave Feminism without White Women

  4. Betty Fredinan • Feminine Mystique published in 1963 • Women are unhappy when solely taking care of the family • Questioned the current models of women’s education, advertising, and magazines • Solution is for women to become professionals join the workforce • Targeted at middle class women

  5. Gloria Steinem • Initially wrote on the choice women faced in the 1960s between a family or a career • “Muckraking” - A Bunny’s Tale about the Playboy Club in NY and the treatment of women there • Activist for women’s rights and co-founded Ms. magazine

  6. Margaret Sanger and Birth Control • Helped the fight for an oral contraception • It would empower women to have control and sexual freedom as men already had • Pill was outlawed in many states • Griswold v. Connecticut 1965 • Struck down state laws banning birth control for married couples

  7. Appeals to Government • National Organization of Women (NOW) • Equal Rights Amendment • Passed Congress in 1972 but did not get ratified by enough states • Opposed by many including Phyllis Schlafly

  8. Today Review the article about 2nd Wave Feminism and be prepared to discuss the following: • Do you think that second-wave feminism was a separate movement from the Civil Rights Movement, or just a different facet of it? Why? • Compare and contrast first-wave feminism (epitomized by figures like Susan B. Anthony) with second-wave feminism (epitomized by figures like Betty Friedan). What were the goals of each movement? To what extent, if at all, did either movement champion the rights of poor women or minority women? • Do you think the second-wave feminist movement achieved its goals? Why or why not?

  9. In your notebook Evaluate the following statement: The success of the women’s rights movements of the 1960s and 1970s was a direct result of the success of LBJ’s Great Society.
