How it’s Made: Pocketknives By Samuel Grey
Long Strips of steel are smoothened by rollers on the conveyer belt
A cutter on the assembly line cuts stencils into the metal
The cut pieces are separated from the leftovers by chutes
The blades are heated on a spinning rack
A metal piece hits the blades, knocking them off when done
The blade is sent to a sandpaper machine to smooth the edges
The blades are jumbled in a moving machine, and are picked up by a magnetic belt
Meanwhile, the wood for the knife is cut into rectangles
The wood is heated, then dipped in liquid plastic
The wood is put aside to cool. It will eventually make the handle.
A piece of metal with drilled holes is placed under the wood.
Screws are drilled, combining metal and wood
Design holes have been cut. metal labels are hot-glued in.
The metal piece is sandpapered to fit the shape of the wood
Premade metal joints are fastened into the handle
Another piece of wood is placed on the other side.
The blades are placed in slots provided in the handle
A machine closes the knife with bolts, and presses to tighten
The blades are sharpened on a grinder
The pieces are welded together
The knife is painted, then is ready to be purchased
Changing The process of creating a pocketknife is always changing. Sometimes, the wood is replaced by a plastic, making creation cheaper, but less durable. This makes trouble when a knife is needed, but is more likely to break. VS
