Methodological issues in qualitative data sharing and archiving (MIQDAS) A short summary of the Cardiff QUADS project Presented at the “Online Qualitative Data Resources: Best Practice in Metadata Creation and Web Standards” workshop Nov 15, 2005 Bruce L. Mason
Background • Building on hypermedia ethnography • Multimedia + hyperlinking • Previously created “Ethnographic Hypermedia Environment” (EHE) • explores the production and consumption of science communication • Combines ethnographic interpretation with hypermedia data set • Constructed in XHTML • To be used as a test-bed for exploring reuse of qualitative research
Issues to be explored • Critical consideration of qualitative research reuse and re-analysis – sharing of data, analysis and methodological context • Explore what constitutes necessary and sufficient methodological information to enable reuse and reanalysis • Multimedia and hyperlinking as complicating factors • Assess the potential role(s) of XML in this process.
Work Programme • A web-mounted version of the EHE to be used as an exemplar for data sharing • An examplar, working “Methodological Trail” to demonstrate the methodological context • The creation of an online guide that explores methodological issues for qualitative data use • Exploring the potential of XML for multimedia qualitative data sharing
