FORD pardons Nixon • President Ford felt that the impending criminal investigation and trial of former President Nixon would be a travesty for the country • Ford’s pardon of former President Nixon was very unpopular, but looked upon now as probably the right move at the time

OPPOSED Congress’ spending • The Democrat Congress sent many spending bills to President Ford’s desk • Ford felt that driving up the deficit was bad policy, especially with inflation problems the U.S. faced • Ford vetoed 39 spending bills in less than three years

REAGAN challenges in primaries • Former California Governor Ronald Reagan challenged President Ford for the 1976 Republican nomination • Ford barely beat out Reagan for the nomination • Although pushed by some conservatives to run as a third party candidate, Reagan backed Ford in the ’76 election
