  1. Tampa Bay Region Air Toxics Sites - 2008 Sydney -NATTS Gandy Skyview - NATTS Azalea

  2. National Air Toxics Trends Sites (NATTS) • VOCs (including acrolein), 1/6; • SVOCs/PAHs, 1/6; • Carbonyls, 1/6; • Metals, 1/6; • Hexavalent Chromium, 1/6; • PM-2.5 Speciation (MetOne SASS), 1/3; • Aethalometer – BC, Continuous (Magee Scientific, AE21); and • Met Parameters – Wind speed, Wind direction, ambient temperature & pressure.

  3. Tampa Bay Region NATTS Major Risk Drivers • VOCs • Acrylonitrile (TO-15) • Benzene (TO-15) • 1,3-Butadiene (TO-15) • Carbon Tetrachloride (TO-15) • 1,4-Dichlorobenzene (TO-15) • 1,1,2,2-Tetrachloroethane (TO-15) • Metals • Hexavalent Chromium (Research method) • Arsenic (IO-3) • Carbonyls • Acetaldehyde (TO-11A) • Acrolein (TO-15)

  4. Clean Diesel Initiatives

  5. Project Partners Pinellas County Clean School Buses Pinellas County School Board (PCSB) United States Environmental Protection Agency (USEPA) Florida Department of Environmental Protection (FDEP) Pinellas County Department of Environmental Management (PCDEM)

  6. Retrofits

  7. 179 diesel oxidation catalysts (DOCs) and closed crankcase ventilation (CCV) systems installed on pre-2003 buses Retrofit Successes Recent installation of retrofit devices on our school buses will eliminate 50 tons of air pollutants.

  8. Idle Reduction Successes • Established Formal Idle Reduction Policy • Established idle reduction training during annual summer driver training and new driver training throughout the year. • Final report data suggest that the idle awareness of the drivers has heightened as a result of the formal driver training program and their knowledge of school bus idle monitoring • Idling is well below thirty minutes per day goal • very few idling complaints received by the district • Citizen awareness has increased

  9. Idle Reduction Successes Participated in the National Idle Reduction Campaign Pilot

  10. Idle reduction strategies get results … 809 buses on the road per day Over 40,000 gallons/year saved by reduced idling (based on 24.36 gallons per vehicle per day) Nearly $170,000 in fuel savings

  11. FY 2008/09 Clean Diesel Initiative • Pinellas County School Board • Continue installation of DOCs and CCV on remaining 91 school buses eligible for retrofits • Pinellas County and PCSB extended Interlocal Agreement to cover additional retrofits

  12. FY 2008/09 Clean Diesel Initiative • City of St. Petersburg Preliminary notification - SEDC grant funding to: • install Diesel Particulate Filters (DPFs) • fuel entire fleet with 20% biodiesel • implement a public information campaign • 63 highway fleet vehicles proposed for the project
