  2. A Letter to the Reviewer… • Is an important piece of your portfolio – it is your introduction to your collection • Is scored on an equal basis with the other pieces in the portfolio – it is no less or more important than any of the others

  3. A Letter to the Reviewer… • Provides a unifying factor that connects all the pieces in the portfolio • Is an actual friendly LETTER, that uses proper formatting and style • Turns a manila folder of your best pieces into a trueportfolio

  4. A Letter to the Reviewer… • Is designed for a student to assess him or herself as a writer • Is a letter in which you introduce, justify, critique and/or evaluate your three best pieces, as well as how these pieces display your overall writing growth

  5. A Letter to the Reviewer is NOT… • An opportunity to praise or criticize Kentucky’s education system • A generic description of stages in the writing process • A generic description of each of the portfolio categories

  6. A Letter to the Reviewer is NOT… • A thank-you note to express gratitude to the reviewer for assessing your portfolio (although a quick “thank you” at the end is appropriate) • An elaborate table of content listing and/or summarizing every portfolio entry

  7. A Letter to the Reviewer is NOT… • An evaluation of your teacher • A list of unsupported claims about your improvement as a writer • An unrevised, unedited piece written on the portfolio due date • A persuasive essay to convince the teacher how much you enjoy writing

  8. Purpose of the Letter to the Reviewer • A description of yourself as a writer, including: • Goals as a writer • Progress and growth as a writer through the year • Who or what has influenced the writing process and growth • Approaches you used when writing

  9. Purpose of theLetter to the Reviewer • Discuss the selection of portfolio pieces, including: A) How you arrived at your selections B) Role of the writing folder in portfolio selections C) Prewriting/thinking about the topic(s) D) Revision strategies that were helpful

  10. Purpose of theLetter to the Reviewer • Discuss selection of portfolio pieces, including: E) Editing strategies that were helpful F) Kinds of changes made and reasons for those changes G) Influence of teacher/peer conferencing

  11. Purpose of theLetter to the Reviewer Any other comments the student wishes to make about his writing over the past four years may be included.

  12. Things to Remember • The Letter to the Reviewer… • Is the only piece written exclusively for the portfolio. • Students have only one Letter to the Reviewer, but have several choices regarding other categories and entries – how will you make yourletter stand out?
