  5. Key Principles • Sounds/phonemes are represented by letters • A phoneme can be represented by one or more letters e.g. Sh, th, ee, etc • The same phoneme can be represented/ spelled in more than one way e.g. rain, may, lake • The same spelling may represent more than one sound e.g. mean, deaf

  6. The ‘phases’ • Phase 1 (Nursery) • Listening to sounds (e.g. Instrumental sounds, rhyme, alliteration). • Phase 2 (Reception) • Graphemes are introduced in sets e.g. s a t p i n • Phase 3 (Reception) • More grapehemes; more of a focus on digraphs (two letters making one sound e.g. /ai/ or /ee/ or /ow/). • Phase 4 (Reception/Year 1) • Focus on four/five letter words e.g. Struck, frog, chunk • Phase 5 (Year 1/Year 2) • Alternative graphemes e.g. The sound /ay/ can be spelled different ways /ay/ /ai/ /a_e/
