Memorization or Realization • Memorization: Take information, store it and later repeat the information back to teacher. • No grasp of the significance of event. • Need to know meaning. • Delivering data to be memorized is no longer a teacher’s primary purpose. • Realizations: Offer students connections in their learning. • Allows students to apply their learning to situations that are meaningful in their lives.
Learning ‘In the Moment’ and ‘After the Fact’ • In The Moment (ITM)- After seeing one example students understand how to solve problem. • After The Fact (ATF) – Do not understand until they see multiple examples. Students are different and they might be ITM learners in one class but ATF learners in another.
But what’s in it for me? • Students • “What’s in it for me?” • “This is stupid.” • “We’ve learned this before.” • “When am I ever going to use this?”

Letting Stupid Out of the Box • Real Experiences • Real Experiences (Equals) STUPID STUPID
Five Causes of Stupid • 1. Called- Dumb, idiot, special, retard, moron, etc. Non-verbal expressions, being laughed at • 2. Comparison- Compare themselves to others or are compared to others. • 3. Confusion- When they don’t know or understand something. • 4 Can’t- Students feel stupid when they CAN’T do something, when they fail at something or make mistakes. • 5. Certain Situations- Students feel stupid when they find themselves in certain situations. Placed in a certain class, participate in certain activities, need help.
Reactions to Feeling Stupid • Withdraw- Back away from experiences, quit school, quit participating in school. • Pretend- Fake responses to that their stupidity is not detected by others. • React Emotionally- Feel embarrassed, angry, upset, sad, worried, nervous, stressed. • Judge- “I’m not good enough” “I’m stupid” “I don’t know anything” • Act Out- Misbehave in class or on the playground. • Become Defensive- Defend themselves by judging their classes or teachers. • Become Motivated-Work harder or study more in order to be better. Produce positive results. • Become Numb-Students feel that being numb is better than dumb. Apathy is one form of numb: “I don’t care. Whatever.”
