  2. Puerto Rico has been part of the US since 1898 (Captured during the Spanish-American War) Since 1917 Puertorricans have been US citizens by birth Just for Fun

  3. Hispanics from different countries, or even different regions of the same country, often have slight differences in dialects (name of industrial equipment). Challenge: Language Barrier

  4. Tex Mex versus Spanish Tex Mex adopted English terms in their vocabulary. They may have difficulty reading correct Spanish Many Hispanic workers use slang (Anglicism) in their vocabulary (especially names of machines and technical terms) Language Barrier

  5. What is a normal word in one Hispanic country could be obscene in another Example: the word for “Cake” in Puerto Rico means something else in Mexico! It can be VERY embarrassing Language Barrier

  6. Cannot translate literally from English to Spanish Some words have more than one meaning Example: Seguridad means Safety But it also means Security Language Barrier

  7. OSHA and Hispanic Contractors Association provide free 10-hour Construction safety courses, in Spanish and English, in Dallas & Ft. Worth, monthly. Construction safety publications in Spanish available A limited number of bilingual trainers is available Safety Training for Hispanics in in Dallas and Ft. Worth

  10. Why not offer English as second language? Many organizations now do It takes many years of study and practice to become bilingual Easier to learn when very young (Grade school) A short course in English will not be enough. The Hispanic Contractors Association of DFW Training Program
