Reverse architecture:Punched out papillae Bad breath Anaerobic spirochaetal infection Precursor to Cancrum Oris (Noma)

  27. Prevention of dental problems and simple treatment may avoid scenes like this Noma or Ameloblastoma • Predisposing factors include: • Unsafe drinking water • Malnutrition (particularly A Vit and B) • Dehydration and poor oral hygiene • Proximity to unkempt livestock • Recent illness • immunodeficiency disease (AID)

  28. Promoting Oral Health in Africa (WHO document May 2016) Prevention Risk of this condition can be reduced through significant public health measures such as promoting good nutritional practices, oral and general hygiene, exclusive breastfeeding in the first six months of life, immunization against prevalent communicable diseases, use of bednets to prevent malaria, and segregation of livestock from human living areas. Education about noma is crucial, as it is treatable in its early stages. Ideally, everybody in a community should be able to identify the first signs of noma (spontaneous bleeding of the gum, fever, bad breath and sometimes facial swelling) and advise about seeking help at the local PHC centre.
