  1. P09454: Design & Testing of Centrifugal Pump Components MSD II –Managerial Presentation Spring 2009

  2. Design Team: • Rishitha Dias - ISE – Project Manager • Kevin Klucher - ME – Lead Engineer • John Hayles - ME • Reme Meck - ME • Ammar Jangbarwala - ME

  3. Project Background: • Project Family: Sustainable Technologies for the Global Marketplace • Project Track: Flow Visualization • Sponsor: Dresser-Rand Corp. • Faculty Guide: Dr. S. Day

  4. Project Deliverable: The goal of the project is to design, build, test and deliver to KGCOE, a centrifugal pump system for particle imaging velocimetry (PIV) studies, which can be used both as a teaching tool for undergraduate students as well as a research tool for graduate and faculty researchers.

  5. Customer Needs: Primary Customers: • Faculty & Graduate Researchers • Undergraduate Instructors Customer Needs / Target Specifications: • Generate Multiple Flows ~ 3 Unique Impeller Designs ~ 2 Unique Diffuser Designs • PIV Compatibility >85% Transmissivity of Pump Components • Lab Teaching Tool < 5 min Component Swap Time > 0.45” Tool Clearance Measureable Flow, Pressure & Power. Parts must withstand a drop from 42”

  14. Project Status:

  15. Budget: • > 40% of the $6,500 budget remaining • Component Manufacture & Materials costs are dominant.

  16. Schedule:Product development Phase Phase 1 Planning Current Stage of Design Phase 2 Concept Development System Level Design Phase 3 Testing & Refinement Phase 4 MSD I MSD II

  17. Schedule: • Project is on Schedule • Component Manufacture Complete • Pump Assembly Complete • Flow Testing Complete • Documentation Complete

  18. Performance: • Measure Pressure, RPM & Flow • Built into GUI functionality • Control Flow, RPM, Pressure • GUI Controls & Valves • PIV Compatible • Clear Acrylic Components • Characterize Various Flows • 5 Impellers & 2 Diffusers available to generate curves • Interchangeable Components • Assembly/Disassembly averages 3.5 minutes

  19. Results:

  20. Test Results • As head rises, the flow decreases, demonstrating basic pump curve relationships. • With the addition of a vaned diffuser, the head generated is increased versus flat ring diffusers.

  21. Discussion • Pump provides 10x the options (impeller and diffuser) with 65% faster component switch time • Head generated is up to 60% greater than previous system benchmarks • Flow rate is not up to maximum theoretical value of 22.3 gpm. However, ~ 25% increase over previous iteration • Diffuser made a large difference in the amount of head generated, up to a 27% increase for the basic 102 impeller • New designs can be rapid prototyped and tested in the test loop within several days based on standard dimensions used for the components
