HISTORY OF ENGINEERING EDUCATION AT CTU IN PRAGUE • The Czech Technical University in Prague - the oldest Technical University in Central Europe, founded 18th January 1707 • MOST IMPORTANT INSTITUTION OF ENGINEERING EDUCATION AND RESEARCH IN AUSTRO-HUNGARIAN EMPIRE • 1807 -FIRST TRANSPORTATION SCIENCES PROJECTS – František Josef von Gerstner -horse driven railway between České Budějovice and Linz • 1815 – Steam vapor automobile – Josef Božek • 1842- Professor Doppler formulated his well-known principle concerning the frequency shift of waves due to the relative velocity of the source and the observer.

HISTORY OF AERONAUTICAL ENGINEERING EDUCATION AT CTU IN PRAGUE • 10 May, 1910 – First Aeronautical Engineering courses are starting – Professor Victor Felber, Aerodynamics, Flight Mechanics, Theory of Flight • 1930 - 1939 – Aeronautical Engineering Education Program –Aircraft Design, Aero-engines Design, Flight Mechanics, Navigation – in that time called Avigation, Aviation Medicine, Aircraft Instruments and Control • 1946 – 1950 - Aeronautical Engineering Education Program continuation – Professor Pešek • 1975 –Foundation of threeAeronautical Engineering Programs at Faculty of Mechanical Engineering – Professor Jerie (Aircraft Design, Aircraft Engines Design, Aeronautical Production, Air Transport), at Faculty of Electrical Engineering – Professor Vejražka (Radio-navigation and Avionics), Professor Salaba (Aircraft and Turbojet Engines Control Systems – Autopilots Design for L410 UVP and L30)

HISTORY OF AERONAUTICAL ENGINEERING EDUCATION AT CTU IN PRAGUE • In 1993 transfer of the Engineering (Master) branch Air Transport to the newly re-established Faculty of Transportation Sciences started, originally only as a Professional Pilot School, from the Department of Aerospace Engineering of the Faculty of Mechanical Engineering – Dr. Milan Kameník and Ing. Bořek Hřebejk • Originally, the Faculty of Transportation Sciences was founded in 1952, as a part of CTU. Later this faculty was transformed into Independent University of Railways and began its activity in Prague-Karlin from 1953 with four faculties: of Civil Engineering; Mechanical Engineering; Electrical engineering; and the faculty of Transportation sciences.During its existence it reached altogether 1200 students and 20 departments. • In 1960/61 the University of Railways was moved from Prague to Žilina and changed the name to The University of Transport and Telecommunications.After splitting of ČSFR was The Faculty of Transportation Sciences was created again as a part of CTU in Prague, education started in academic year 1993/94

HISTORY OF AERONAUTICAL ENGINEERING EDUCATION AT CTU IN PRAGUE • In 2002 Department of Air Transport (DAT) was established– Its founder was late Professor Ludvik Kulcak • Till now the education in the field of aviation is provided in three bachelor branches • Branch Professional Pilot • Branch Technology of Aircraft Maintenance • Branch Air Transport • One Master (Engineering) Branch - Traffic and Management of Air Transport • One Doctoral Branch - Traffic and Management of Air Transport

DEPARTMENT OF AIR TRANSPORT • The education provided by the DAT is devoted entirely to the aviation • Thetotal number of studentsstudying on DAT in the Academic year 2009/2010 was400 • 12 full-time employees and 12 part-time employees • 28 Ph.D. students • 15 external teachers • Quality assurance : Authorities supervising quality of education - MŠMT, CAA, EASA, JAA

STUDY BRANCHESBc. branch Air Transport • The main goal of this branch is to grant an University degree in civil aviation and assure a theoretical knowledge in accordance with Part 66. • This bachelor branch has subsequent specializations: • B1 – Line maintenance - Mechanical • B1.1 – Airplanes Turbine Engines • B1.2 – Airplanes Piston Engines • B2 – Line maintenance - Avionics • Branch is approved from Ministry of education • Standard period of study 3 years • Students are prepared for medium management posts in organizations enterprising in civil aviation • Attendance and distance forms of study

STUDY BRANCHESBc. branch Air Transport (cont.) • After the FIRST year in the common trunk of bachelor study program Technology and Technics of Transport and Communicationsstudents choose the Bachelor Air Transport Branch and continue their studies at DAT in following projects: • Project „Modern trends in airport's developments “ • Project „Systems of control and security of air traffic “ • Project „Quality in civil aviation “ • Project „Management and economy of air transport “

STUDY BRANCHESBc. branch Technology of Aircraft Maintenance(cont.) • Students are enrolled directly to the Technology of Aircraft Maintenance Branch directly to the first year according to their results in the Entrance Examination (Mathematics and English)– about 50% from the candidates are accepted • The education is approved from Ministry of education and EASA • Reference number: CZ.147.0004 • Standard period of study 4 years • Students are prepared for posts of certificatory mechanics and workmen of technical control

STUDY BRANCHESBc. branch Technology of aircraft maintenance(cont.) • Quality of education is guaranteed by experts from the Faculty of transport sciences, Mechanical engineering and Electrical engineering of CTU • DAT for high quality training insuranse profits also from a close cooperation and participation of professionals from industry and research institutes in Prague Region

Practical maintenance training

PROFESSIONAL PILOT BRANCHBc. Branch Professional Pilot • Students having positive Medical Certificate grade one, and Excellent or Very Good High School Leaving Certificate, are enrolled directly to the Professional Pilot Branch to the first year according to their results in the Entrance Examination (Mathematics and English)– about 35% from the candidates are accepted • About 30 - 35 students pass successfully the entrance examination and are enrolled to the first year • DAT received the approval granted by the CAA and EASA and holds this approval as a Flying Training Organization of the No. CZ FTO 010. • Standard period of studies is 3 years

PROFESSIONAL PILOT BRANCHBc. Branch Professional Pilot(cont.) • The Professional Pilot training consists of two integrated parts: • 1. Theoretical training fulfilling the requirements of the Accreditation Commission of the Ministry of Education, Youth and Sports and also requirements of European regulation for pilot training JAR FCL1 for theoretical integrated training ATPL (frozen) – This theoretical part is fully provided by the DAT • 2. Practical flying training fulfilling requirements of European regulation for pilot training JAR FCL1 for theoretical integrated training ATPL (frozen) – this practical part is provided by approved and by the Faculty of Transportation Sciences contracting In Flight training organizations (FTO) certificated for integrated practical training

PROFESSIONAL PILOT BRANCHBc. Branch Professional Pilot (cont.) • Students are prepared for theoretical knowledge on Bc. degree; then pass exams on CAA for obtaining Air transport pilot license (ATPL-frozen) are included • In actual academic year 32 students are enrolled into branch Professional Pilot • State exams normally pass with success more than 90 students from this branch each year • Efficiency of the exams at CAA is 80 – 100 % • DAT significantly cooperates with Faculty of Mechanical Engineering in some technical subjects like: Aircraft Engines, Airframe ans Systems, Aerodynamics and Flight Mechanics • Significant part of education (primarily of practical subjects) is supported by professional pilots of CSA and Travel Service, who are mostly former students of Faculty of Transportation Sciences

PROFESSIONAL PILOT BRANCHBc. Branch Professional Pilot (cont.) • Study is organized in such way, that during study pass students practical training in Flight training organization (FTO) certificated for integrated practical training. It means: • F-Air Benešov, Bemoair Benešov, Delta Systém Air Hradec Králové, with these FTO´s DAT cooperates • Students refund practical training from their own financial source • Total price of practical training is about 1 million Czech crowns at this time. Students don't have certainty of pernancy to any air transport company after the end of study. • Pilot licence, which student obtains after successful ending of theoretical and practical training and passing exams on CAA, is valid in all countries of JAA, it means 35 countries in Europe

STUDY CURRICULABc. Branch Professional Pilot • Study curricula contains common Bachelor Program trunk which gives to students fundamentals of technical and transportation engineering sciences • Academic year is divided into two semesters, winter and summer. Each semester contains 14 weeks of lectures and practical seminars and exercises in small classes, following by period devoted to examinations • Specialized studies classes for Professional Pilot Branch starts directly from the beginning with one course and number of courses gradually increase in following two semesters. Fourth, fifth and sixth semester is then fully devoted to special subjects, reguired by the themes and number of teaching hours by JAR FCL 1 regulations. • Special emphasis is put on good knowledge of general and aviation English • In last year a bachelor thesis is carried out by students • During theoretical training students pass through practical in flight training at flying certified schools • Studies are finished by state examination from three subjects and by a defence of a bachelor thesis • ATPL (frozen) license is granted by CAA after passing successfully prescribed examinations

CONCLUSION • 1. Department of Air Transport of the Faculty of Transportation Sciences of the Czech Technical University in Prague is the only academic institution in the Czech Republic offering a professional pilot training as a integrated course according to JAR FCL1 regulations as a university bachelor study branch awarding beside the academic title Bachelor also a license ATPL (frozen)

CONCLUSION • 2. From the foundation of the Faculty of Transportation Sciences in 1993 till now more than 230 graduates at the CTU in Prague received a professional pilot license. The majority of them are now flying as captains, co-pilots and also in the positions of instructors and inspectors at CSA, Travel Service and others airlines worldwide.

CONCLUSION • 3. According to the JAR FCL 1 requirements DAT had published all textbooks needed for theoretical training. Following textbooks are at student’s disposal in a special study room at the DAT. • Air Law • Aircraft General Knowledge • Flight Performance & Planning • Human Performance & Limitations • Meteorology • Navigation • Operational Procedures • Principles of Flight • Communications

CONCLUSION • 4. DAT is active member of PEGASUS Network and maintains wide international contacts and collaboration • 5.DAT is a part of the CTU which is fully accredited as a “research university” and therefore it is involved also in research in the field of civil aviation and offers beside bachelor degree branches also engineering and Ph.D. programs of education.

CONCLUSION • 6. DAT profit for the best quality of professional pilot training from the unique environment of the Czech Technical University in Prague (cooperation with Faculty of Mechanical Engineering and Faculty of Electrical Engineering • 7.Aeronautical engineering education and research at CTU in Prague has now more than 100 years old tradition. Between 1975 – 2005 more than 1000 Aeronautical Engineering students graduated in various fields of Aeronautical Engineering at the Faculty of Mechanical Engineering and at the Faculty of Electrical Engineering

CONCLUSION • 8. At DAT in the three Bachelor and one Master Branches since its foundation in 2002 more than 600 student graduated in the field of Air Transport • 9. DAT is accredited for providing complex education in all structures of the Bologna system in the field of Air Transport and Traffic and Management of Air Transport: • Bachelor Branches • Master Branch • Doctoral Branch
