What is Health?. Health- is the state of a person’s body, mind, and feelings and how they get along with others. There are 3 Types of Health: Physical Health- condition of a person’s body Mental/ Emotional Health- condition of a person’s mind and how they deal with their emotions.

  1. What is Health? Health-is the state of a person’s body, mind, and feelings and how they get along with others. There are 3 Types of Health: Physical Health-condition of a person’s body Mental/ Emotional Health-condition of a person’s mind and how they deal with their emotions. Family/ Social Health-Condition of a person’s relationships with others. Wellness- A state of balanced health or well being.

  2. Factors that Affect your Health • Heredity: Traits that are transmitted to a person from their relatives. • Random Events: Events over which you have little or no control. • Lifestyle: The way in which a person lives their life. * This is the only factor that you CAN control!!

  3. What’s Your Personality? Personality- a person’s unique blend of traits. Personality is what makes you THINK, ACT, and FEEL the way you do. What are some common personality traits? OUTGOING SENSE OF HUMOR INTELLIGENT ATHLETIC KIND GEREROUS CONSIDERATE OPTIMISTIC PESIMISTIC CARING ENERGETIC

  4. What Shapes our Personality? • Values-the principles or standards that guide the way a person acts. Positive values- family, health, doing well in school • Character-the effort a person uses to act on responsible values. Six Traits of Good Character: honesty, respect, responsibility, caring, fairness, citizenship Responsible Adults- our parents and role models teach us our values.

  5. Resisting Peer Pressure Peer Pressure- is the influence or pressure that people of a similar age place on a person to behave in a certain way. Example) Friendly competition with classmates may encourage you to work harder to do well on your math test. Peer Pressure can be negative too!! It can tempt you to make wrong decisions. Example) You may be pressured to engage in risk behaviors such as smoking or riding a bike without a helmet. Peer pressure can be VERY hard to resist. You may worry that people are going to make fun of you, and your friends may get angry.

  6. Using Resistance Skills Resistance Skills are skills that help a person say “no” to an action or leave a situation. Below are 4 Resistance Skills you can use when you need to resist negative peer pressure! • Say “NO” in a firm voice • Give reasons for saying NO- you may need to repeat your NO several times • Be certain your NO matches your words- Use non verbal behavior to match your verbal behavior. 4. Ask an adult for help if you need it

  7. EXPRESSING EMOTIONS Emotions are feelings a person has. Some common emotions are… ANGER FEAR SADNESS LOVEDISGUSTANXIOUS CONFUSIONHAPPINESS

  8. EMOTIONS… • Are a normal part of life • Can sometimes cause us STRESS • Can swing from one extreme to another (especially during the teenage years) • Can make us confused and sometimes say things we may regret later. • IT’S HOW WE EXPRESS THEM THAT CAN BE HEALTHFUL OR HARMFUL!!

Followtheseguidelines… • ADMIT- that you are feeling the emotion. • Identifythe emotions you feel and the cause of your reaction. • Calm down- try not to act when your feelings are very stong. • Tell others what you feel by saying “I feel angry,” or “I feel hurt.” This helps keep others from feeling attacked. • Walk away if you feel you are losing control. • Talk with a trusted adult if you have problems with emotions.

  10. Express Emotions Healthyfully • GroupSkits: • You will form groups of about 4 friends. • Create a situation in which someone in your group is feeling a very strong emotion. • Work together as a group to act out a SHORT skit following the 6 guidelines for expressing strong emotions.

Grading Rubric Level 4: 15-20 points -Emotion is clearly defined in skit. -Emotion is displayed appropriately. • 4 Guidelines for Expressing Emotions are displayed in skit • Each group member has a role. Level 3: 10-15 points • Emotion is apparent skit • 3 Guidelines for Expressing Emotions are displayed in skit. • Most of the group members had a role in the skit. Level 2: 5-10 points • Emotion is hard to determine in skit • Emotion is not displayed as appropriately as instructed • 1 or 2 Guidelines for Expressing Emotions are displayed in skit. Level 1: 0-5 points • Emotion is not clearly defined. (It’s hard for audience to tell when the person is feeling) • No Guidelines for Expressing Emotions are displayed. • Emotion is not displayed appropriately. (example- aggressive behavior, inappropriate behavior.
