  1. Prospects for CUORE and Latest Results from CUORICINO Eric B. Norman Lawrence Livermore National Laboratory

  2. Energy absorber TeO2 crystal C  2 nJ/K Thermometer NTD Ge-thermistor R  100 MW dR/dT  100 kW/mK Heat sink T  10 mK Thermal coupling CUORE Detector concepts • Temperature signal: DT = E/C 0.1 mK for E = 1 MeV • Voltage signal: DV = I  dR/dT DTDV = 1 mV for E = 1 MeV • Signal recovery time: t = C/G  0.5 s Energy resolution (FWHM):  5 keV at 2500 keV

  3. CUORE Array of988crystals: 19 towers of 52 crystals/tower. M=0.78 tonof TeO2 70 cm Search for 0n DBD of 130Te Qbb = 2529 keV Natural isotopic abundance [130Te] = 34.08% Therefore, isotopic enrichment is unnecessay

  4. MC simulation of CUORE background Details of CUORE module used in MC simulations

  5. What can CUORE do ?

  6. CUORE and CUORICINO location CUORICINO and CUOREexperiments are located in the Underground National Laboratory of Gran Sasso L'Aquila – ITALY the mountain provides a 3500 m.w.e. shield against cosmic rays Two dilution refrigerators: Hall A (CUORICINO) Hall C (final R&D tests for CUORE)

  7. CUORICINO Active mass during first runs: 42 x 0.790 kg = 33.2 kg 17 x 0.330 kg = 5.6 kg ~ 11 kg 130Te A prototype for CUORE

  8. CUORICINO Performance 2615 keV 208Tl 5x5x5 cm3crystals 3x3x6 cm3crystals • average 5x5x5 cm3 crystals ~ 7 keV • average 3x3x6 cm3 crystals ~ 9 keV • Energy calibration spectrum obtained with 232Th source (summed over all crystals) Energy resolutions of individual crystals  The best energy resolution @ 2615 keV is 3.9 keV

  9. Results of CUORICINO Runs 1&2 C. Arnaboldi et al. PRL 95, 142501 (2005) exposure = 10.85 kg y (TeO2) FWHM at 2615 keV = 9.2 +0.5 keV bkgd in the 0nbb region = 0.18+0.01 counts /(keV kg y) t0n1/2 > 1.8 x 1024 y at 90% C.L. mn < 0.2 – 1.1 eV

  10. DBD and Neutrino Masses Present Cuoricino region Possible evidence (best value 0.39 eV) H.V. Klapdor-Kleingrothaus et al., Nucl.Instrum.and Meth. ,522, 367 (2004). Using Klapdor’s matrix element for 130Te the Cuoricino limit is 0.53 eV “quasi” degeneracy m1 m2  m3 Inverse hierarchy m212= m2atm Direct hierarchy m212= m2sol Cosmological disfavoured region (WMAP) Feruglio F. , Strumia A. , Vissani F. hep-ph/0201291
