  2. Terrorism • Refers to any attempt of force aimed at achieving political goals • Islamist terrorism  the attempt or use of force to achieve political goals by mobilizing or referring to Islam as a source of justification • Discource of Islam terrorism: • Fundamentalist • Extremist • Terrorist

Why Southeast Asia? • A sizeable presense of Muslims in the region • Historically has been closely linked with the Muslim world • Region is fairly accessible to outsiders and contributed to close interaction with Islamists elsewhere • Secular government often alleged to have failed to effectively manage their Islamic constituencies

  4. Long-standing Islamic insurgencies provided opportunities for transnational influences to penetrate the region • Experiencing a rise of religious revivalism and fundamentalism • The demographic expanse of Muslim, againts the backdrop of a glorious Islamic past, evident from various indigious Islamic power, tendency among some groups to look back to the past to face the present and future • Various external groups and development made a general revivalism of things Islamic

Counterterrorism difficulties • Islamist extremism and terrorism are anchored on one of the most important religions, philosophies, and ideologies in the world, namely Islam  there is every possibility that adherents of Islam, the second-largest religion will intensify their defense of their religion at any cost. • Governments and their allies concentrating on physically destroying the extremists and terrorists  failed to address a whole array of other factor that succeeded in ensuring the continous swelling in the rank of extremist and terrorist.

Southeast Asia  “second front” of war on terror • Important part of the Muslim world and where radical Islam is fast gaining around • The presence of many radical groups • The most dangerous Islamist terrorist group, the AJAI, continues to operate • Witnessed a number of violent attack against what has been dubbed as anti-Islamic “Western targets” • The host of many training camps, churning out violent Jihadists • Various suicide bombings, there are nearly 300 Islamist radicals in the jail
