Topic Factors that lead to negative perceptions of Audiology & Speech Sciences undergraduates towards group work in Research Methodology course (NNNA 3073). Group member : Oh Shu Xuan Sharafuddin Yu Xuan Atiqah Hafizah Helene Lee Loong Yee Lee Pei Teng
General Objective To study the factors that cause students’ negative perceptions towards group work in Research Methodology course (NNNA 3073).
Specific Objective To determine if motivation difficulties, interaction difficulties & logistical difficulties are the factors that lead to negative perception towards group work in Research Methodology course (NNNA 3073) among 3rd and 4th year students in JASP.
Research Question Are motivation difficulties, interaction difficulties and logistical difficulties significant factors that lead to negative perceptions towards group work in Research Methodology course (NNNA 3073) among students in JASP?
Hypothesis Ho: Motivation difficulties, interaction difficulties and logistical difficulties are the significant factors that lead to negative perceptions towards group work in Research Methodology course (NNNA 3073) among students in JASP. HA:Motivation difficulties, interaction difficulties and logistical difficulties are not the significant factors that lead to negative perceptions towards group work in Research Methodology course (NNNA 3073) among students in JASP. There are some other factors that contribute to negative perceptions towards the group work.
Justification • A research by Nyugenet al (2005) found that there is cultural mismatch in the form of cooperative and collaborative learning between students in Asian countries which have characteristics of a collective society and students in Western countries which tend to be individualistic. The same aspects of peer learning in Western countries may not be culturally appropriate or applicable to Asian students. • Investigate if Malaysian students adopting group work face similar problems (motivation difficulties, interaction difficulties and logistical difficulties) as their Western counterparts. • Provides opportunity for students to voice out/ feedback on the shortcomings of peer learning experience. • Ways to improve peer learning as part of the curriculum can be suggested, which will be useful for lecturers and students alike in future projects.
Inclusion criteria • Audiology & Speech Sciences year 3 & 4th yr students • Took NNNA3073 Research Methodology during Semester 1 during 2009/2010, 2010/2011 • Participated in research group work under this subject
Exclusion criteria • Students that have not yet taken NNNA3073 Research Methodology (year 1 & 2)
Design study • Survey • Qualitative research
Target Population • UKM FSKB Audiology & Speech Sciences year 3 & 4 students
Sampling method • Convenient sampling • The patients are selected, in part or in whole, at the convenience of the researcher
Sampling frame & sample unit • Sampling frame: a list of 3rd yr and 4th yr JASP students who had undergone research methodology course in 2009/2010(4th yr),2010/2011(3rd yr) • Sample unit: an Audiology or Speech science student who had undergone research methodology course in 2010/2011
Sample size Formula for selected population n = x2NP(1-P) 2(N-1) + x2P(1-P) = 3.84 (65) 0.5 (1-0.5) 0.052 (65-1) + 3.84 (0.5)(1-0.5) = 55.7 = 56 students n = sample size N = known population (number of 3rd yr+4th JASP students)
