Era of Good Feelings • A turning point for the United States • A point where there was national purpose • The America’s were united and strived to keep unity • The Monroe Doctrine was created • They felt independent from Britain and they had a new sense of freedom
Monroe Doctrine • A policy that stated no European countries could colonize in the Americas • If they did try to colonize it was be considered an act of aggression • Introduced on December 2, 1823 • Showed that they felt independent • Made during the Era of Good Feelings • Showed that they felt independent and no longer needed nor did they want Britain’s help
After Presidency • He stayed in the White House 3 weeks after his presidency ended because his wife was ill • Went back to his house in Virginia • After his wife died he left to live with his daughter in New York • He died on July 4, 1831 • He was the third of 5 presidents to die on independence day (John Adams and Thomas Jefferson)
