  1. The Effect of Gender and Personality Type on Movie Preference Samantha Godwin

  2. Background • Jungian Personalities • Bechdel Test • Score of 0: less than two named female characters • Score of 1: two (or more) named female characters who do not converse • Score of 2: two (or more) named female characters who speak to one another about men/their love lives • Score of 3: two (or more) named female characters who discuss something other than men/their love lives

  3. Purpose • The purpose of this study was to determine whether gender and personality type have an effect on preferred film genres and female presence. This type of research can be used to make advertising more efficient, as well as guidelines for production of films that are more accessible to a range of viewers and make the use of websites such as Hulu and Netflix more profitable and user-friendly.

  4. Demographics

  5. Procedure • Data was collected using a survey on quia.com • Participants were asked to choose the best descriptor for their favorite and second favorite film genres • Participants were asked to identify their favorite and second favorite individual films • Participants were directed to a personality test based on Jung Typology and Myers-Briggs research, then select the personality type they were identified as • Individual films were evaluated based on genre • Individual films were assessed using the scores available on bechdeltest.com

  8. Results

  9. Discussion & Conclusion • Hypothesis B supported, which suggests that personality type has a relationship to preferred movie genre even as gender does not. The fact that gender did not have a relationship with movie genre is suggestive of the falseness of prevalent gender stereotypes in our society. • Hypothesis C supported, suggesting that females are more concerned with their presence—or lack thereof—in media while males are more neutral. • The Bechdel test only measures presence, not representation, and not everyone fits into one Jung type. • Limited movie genres used in analysis. • Impact of race/age not evaluated.
