Mind Over Matter Make a T-Table read “Density”: Fact or idea I Read Question I have about the Fact or Idea Density: is the ratio of the material’s mass to the volume it occupies Intensive Properties: the value does not depend on the amount of material tested. (Density) Extensive Property: does depend on the amount of the matter that is present (mass) Atoms: smallest unit of an element that maintains the properties of that element What questions do you have about what you read?
Mind Over Matter Question I have about the Fact or Idea Fact or idea I Read Elements: Pure substance made of only one kind of atom Compound: a substance that is made from atoms of two or more elements Molecule: a neutral group of atoms held together by bonding Pure Substance: fixed compositions and are different from mixtures in that every sample of a pure substance has exactly the same characteristics properties and composition. Mixture: blend of tow or more kinds of matter, but still retains its own identity and can be separated by physical means
Process and Procedures 2a) Imagine you are looking at two chains that are the same in every respect except that one is made of silver and the other is made of platinum. Which would have a greater mass? Why? Platinum chain would have a larger mass. The density of platinum 21.1 g/cm3 is twice the density of silver 10.5 g/cm3 The chains would have the same volume, so the platinum chain would be heavier. Platinum chain would be heavier. Platinum has more mass packed into a given volume.
Process and Procedures 2b) Jewelers measure the mass of gemstones in carats. One carat is equal to 200 milligrams. Which would look bigger, a 1-carat diamond or a 1-carat cubic zirconia? Why? The one carat diamond would look bigger than the 1 carat cubic zirconia. The density of the cubic zirconia is 5.8 g/cm3 The density of a diamond is 3.5n g/cm3 Since the two samples have the same mass (1-carat, 200mg) the gemstone with the smaller density must occupy a larger volume
Process and Procedures 2c) A silver ring has a density of 10.5 g/cm3 . A polished aluminum copy looks the same, but a ring with a volume of 2 mL has a mass of only 5.4 g. Compare the densities of the metals that make up the 2 rings. Record any calculations you make The polished aluminum ring has a density of 2.7 g/cm3 The density of the polished aluminum ring is much lower than the silver ring, with a density of 10.5 g/cm3 D= m/v: D=5.4 g/2.0mL; D= 2.7 g/mL OR 2.7 g/cm3
