Springfield Secondary College Overview • Springfield Secondary College is very different to most schools • Academic school that provides important and unique dimensions to prepare all students for the challenges of life in the twenty-first century • Encourage openness, independence, self-motivation and initiative amongst staff and students • Inclusive curriculum and democratic structures to enable student learning in both mainstream and alternative avenues • Co-educational school, with over 800 students, 40% from non-English speaking backgrounds

Democratic Structures via Student Council • Consultative and collaborative mode of decision making • Decisions and school structures are sought through teachers, parents, students and our local community • Our school council is elected and responsible for leading the school’s development • 25 members: 5 parents (non DEET employees); 5 parents (DEET employees); 5 community members; 5 students (S.R.C)
Student Representative Council (SRC) • Student body is represented by a Student Representative Council (SRC) • Four representatives from each year level, a school captain and a school vice-captain • Elections are held twice a year to give students the representation they want • Students become familiar with the processes of a modern democracy • Students are encouraged to form interest groups and to pursue their aims through the democratic process
Inclusive Education through E.S.L programs • High proportion of students come from non-English speaking backgrounds which accounts for our extensive E.S.L program • High value is placed on our students’ native languages and home culture • Inclusion of home languages in classes within the entire school
Inclusive Education through ‘Sport for all’ • Structured sport and recreational classes held weekly for all students regardless of perceived ability • Highly qualified and experienced teachers assist students with physical and mental ‘(dis)abilities’ to engage all students in activities • Semi-structured recreational activities conducted daily at morning tea and lunch breaks
Diverse and Culturally Aware School • Cultural diversity is celebrated and utilised • We foster a genuine respect for and understanding of the differences that are vital as a community and as a society • Strong links to the varying ethnically based groups within the community • Engage with these groups at every appropriate opportunity • Create learners who are respected for their different cultural identities
Cultural Issues Committee • Standing committee dedicated to dealing with any cultural or ethnical based issues in a culturally sensitive way • Ensures that students have their own formal process within which to raise and discuss these issues on their own terms • Importantly, this committee is overseen by members of the teaching staff, who are a vital part of its activities
Student Welfare • Peer support program; year 11 and 12 students work with year 7 students in terms 1 and 2 • Activities include: • Billy Cart Derby • Market Day • Incursions and Excursions • Geelong’s Adventure Park
Student Counselling • Supportive counselling program for all students • Run by highly qualified and experienced teachers in conjunction with community based charities such as Beyond Blue • Counsellors work with Peer Support Leaders whom assist our year 7 students
Pastoral Care • Pastoral groups for every year level; years 7 – 12 • Support for our students as they navigate the many challenges and issues that exist in their daily lives • Supported by the school counselling staff
Permaculture / School Gardens Project • Students learn about the environment, natural systems and sustainability • Encourages healthy lifestyle and eating • Vehicle for social interaction • Strengthens relationships between the school, students, families and the community • Exposes students to different career paths

Performing and Visual Arts • Offer unique opportunities in the Arts • Dance, drama, music, visual communication and design, visual art and media studies • 500 seat Springfield Performing Arts Centre • Yearly school production and theatre festival
Our musical program is aimed at assisting students to reach their highest potential in musical expression • Program is led by two seasoned professional musicians whom operate their music company nearby our school
