  2. Technological Advances • Ming dynasty developed huge ships called “junks” • Held 500 people • Had multiple decks, masts, and rudders to help steer • Had watertight compartments to prevent sinking • Magnetic compass – used to navigate open sea • Opened trade routes to India and southeast Asia

Technological Advances • Chinese invented paper in 105 • By 800s, made books using block printing – covered with ink and pressed on paper • Later made movable type to be taken apart and put together to use again • Cost of books decreased • More schools opened and literacy increased • 900s Chinese discovered gunpowder • First used in fireworks • Song era – made bombs and rockets • Gunpowder spread around the world – later used in warfare

  4. Technological Advances • Crafted harness to control animals like horses when pulling loads • Weaving and spinning machines allowed workshops to make more and better silk • Trade lead to creativity • Water pumps and wheelbarrows to build projects • Canals used for inland trade

Chinese Art and Culture • The Tang era is known as the peak of Chinese poetry • The Song era is known for its painters • Porcelain became major trade item • Thinner and stronger than other materials used to make dishes and it was beautiful • Silk was highly valued became more organized industry • Factories improved quality and increased decorations

Religion and Thought • Daoism • Founder – Laozi • Key values – spiritual growth, harmony with nature • Influence in China – popular but no government support • Buddhism • Founder – Siddhartha Gautama • Key values – spiritual enlightenment form within • Influence in China – most popular during the Tang dynasty • Confucianism • Confucius • Key values – order, harmonious relationships, respect for authority • Influence in China – backed by more dynasties including the Song dynasty and the Ming dynasty

Chinese Influence Spreads • Spread of Confucianism and Buddhism • Vietnam, Korea (strong), and Japan adopted Confucian ideas • Buddhism spread to East Asia, 1st to Korea then to Japan • Vietnam, Korea, and Japan adopted elements of Chinese culture • Borrowed writing system, painting, music, and architecture • Built capitals that modeled Changan • Culinary arts were adopted from other countries • Use of chopsticks, wok pan to cook foods and drinking tea
