Technology • Should K-12 students be aloud to have laptops, tablets, phones, and calculators in school? • Effect the learning environment? • Do they really learn the material? • Does the technology encourage cheating? • Does technology improve students knowledge of a subject? • Calculators, Mobile technology, Laptops? Helpful? Or are they just a distraction.
Examples of Technology in Education • One Science Classroom in Colorado is dedicated to learning science and using new technology. This class is equipped with: • 10 iPad- Field Trips and Classroom use • 2 iPod touches- Field Trips • 2 digital Cameras- Projects • 1 Flip camera- Video taping experiments • 3 GPS units- For Plotting Geographic Maps and learning Coordinates. • 5 desktops computers • 30 shared laptops • 25 Google Netbooks • Improve both students with special needs and the average student. TCAP (Colorado’s Standardized Test) scores have improved over the past 2 years.
Calculators • Where and When should calculators be aloud? • Is it taking away from the learning process? • New Calculators: Do they really teach the fundamentals every child should know? • TI-Nspire • Casio Touch Screen Handheld Calculator
Calculators in the Classroom • According to Research, calculators do not improve the fundamental knowledge of simple math applications, such as arithmetic. • When should kids be aloud to use calculators? • Calculators in the classroom has increased over the past 20 years. 20 years ago the standards for math and science were not as large as they are now. Now kids are expected to be in Algebra in 7th grade and Geometry in 8th. • Mathematica: “Computers should be used to advance the understanding of math the way it is really used in the world” • http://www.ted.com/talks/conrad_wolfram_teaching_kids_real_math_with_computers.html • Application>Understanding
