  5. What’s Not New? • Paper/Pencil tests • Two cut scores • Satisfactory Performance • Advanced Performance • Tests for ELLs • Special Education Modified & Alternate Tests

  7. What Is New… • First administration in spring 2012 • Make-ups will be held for all tests • No SSI retests in spring/summer 2012 • Passing standards will not be set until fall 2012 • Confidential Student Reports will be sent to parents no earlier than January 2013

  8. What is New… • It all starts with College Readiness • English III • Algebra II • Critical skills tracked back to Grade 3

  9. What Is New… • Longer tests—More questions than TAKS • 4-hour time limit • Increased rigor—A higher level of student performance will be required than was required on TAKS

So what’s on the test? • Readiness Standards • Essential for success in the current grade • Important for next grade level work • Address broad and deep ideas, concepts and skills • Supporting Standards • Important but do not play a critical role in grade level success • Address more narrow ideas • Process Skills • In conjunction with standards in math, science and social studies

  12. How many questions? • Readiness Standards (30-40% of testable TEKS) • Will make up 60-65% of STAAR assessment • Supporting Standards (60-70% of testable TEKS) • Will make up 35-40% of STAAR assessment

  13. Reading—Grades 6-8 • Different genres that may appear on the test • Poetry • Drama • Some passages will have more questions than others • Will assess critical analysis rather than literal understanding

  15. Writing—Grade 7 • Two-day test • Day 1—All of the multiple choice questions and 1 prompt • Day 2—2 writing prompts • Each composition will be one page in length • Personal narrative with extension • Expository • Revising and editing tested separately

  17. Mathematics—Grades 6-8 • Will have 4 griddable questions • Grades 6-8 will have the same grids as those on TAKS

When do we test? • Tuesday & Wednesday, March 27 & 28— Grade 7 Writing • Tuesday, March 27—Grade 8 Math • Wednesday, March 28—Grade 8 Reading • Tuesday, April 24—Grades 6 & 7 Math • Wednesday, April 25—Grade 6 Reading and Grade 8 Science • Thursday, April 26—Grade 7 Reading and Grade 8 Social Studies

  24. What can you do? • Make sure your child attends school everyday • Make sure your child arrives on time everyday • Encourage your child to excel • Talk about your child’s school work • Read with your child • Make sure your child arrives on time on testing days

So what do you do now? • Be familiar with the options available at Middle School • High School Credit Classes for grades 7 and 8 • Learn about the options available at our Early College High School • Dual Credit • Certification Programs – Nursing, Culinary Arts, Aerospace Engineering • Plan for your future early to put yourself in the best position possible!

Consider the following when choosing courses • Athletics – Grades 7 & 8 • Transportation not provided by school • Practice held either before OR after school depending on sport • Band • Cost of band instrument – rent or purchase • Sectionals for Grades 7 & 8 held before or after school depending on instrument • Other activities • Raising animals • Church • Rigorous lessons in multiple advanced classes

  34. 5th grade students • You will have 6 different teachers • You move to a different class every 50 minutes • 4 minute passing period • In pre-athletics, you don’t participate in competitive sports

  35. Dates to Remember • Feb. 27th- Course Selection Sheets (CSS) distributed to Grades 5-7 • Mar. 2nd– Deadline for 5th graders to submit CSS to homeroom teacher • Mar. 5th– Deadline for 6th and 7th graders to submit CSS to PE/Athletics Coaches

  36. Deadlines • Mar. 9th • Deadline for submitting CSS • Failure to submit a CSS by the deadline will result in courses being selected by the Counselor • April 2nd • Deadline for parents to make changes to CSS • Parent MUST contact Counselor to make changes

  38. 26 credits for HS Graduation • Floresville High School students have an 8 period day • 32 opportunities to earn 26 credits • 4X4 = 16 credits • 4 courses in Math, English, Science, Social Studies • 10 credits • Foreign Language (2), Speech(.5), Fine Arts (1), PE/Athletics (1), Electives (5.5) • Graduation Plans • Recommended • Distinguished
