MSD1 P09011 – Object Recognition (VAOR) – 2/20/2009 WEEK 10 PROJECT REVIEW PRESENTATION
Primary Objective: • Design an apparatus that will be used to present three-dimensional objects in a match-to-sample procedure • Purpose: • To assess the beluga whale’s visual and auditory perception abilities • Scope of Project: • 1 Testing Apparatus • 2 sets of 30 Target Objects • Testing Procedure • Supporting Documentation • Budget: $2000
A common test to assess perception abilities (bats, humans, whales, dolphins)
Operator and whale safe • Quiet operation • Durable & weatherproof • Corrosion-proof • No external power • Compact and mobile • 1-person operation • Able to block whale and trainer’s view of both object sets • 24” total design width • 1-3sec target time between object set display, 5 sec max • 5lb max object weight

Aquarium personnel do not approve design; ensure that design process follows aquarium requirements for whale and operator safety, periodically get feedback from veterinarians • Components corrode or fail within 1-2 years; design with corrosion-proof materials and perform sufficient life cycle testing to expose weaknesses, revise design if necessary • Object motion and shielding does not work as expected while underwater; build mockups to test concept, revise or redesign if needed
Nearing completed, approved design • Waiting for review and approval from Mystic Aquarium personnel (meeting today) • Small-scale proof of concept testing to occur • Final design is contingent upon manual/electric drive choice from customer • Manually powered version: $2700 • Electric Motorized version: $3700 • Design finalized during Exam/Break week • Final Design approval from customer and aquarium, first purchases during week 1 of MSD2
Major Spring Quarter Milestones: • Working apparatus and object prototypes tested at aquarium (3/30/09 – Week 4) • Finalized apparatus, final objects, and user’s manual (4/27/09 – Week 8) • Final testing protocol and all products complete (5/11/09 – Week 10) • Weeks 1-4: Design completion, orders placed, apparatus and first objects assembled, initial testing performed, field testing, aquarium personnel approval • Weeks 5-10: Design revisions, life cycle testing, all objects and supporting literature completed, apparatus delivered to customer, final approval
