  9. Self Respect in High School Good choices can lead to respect … Of peers…. Of school staff…. Of family…. Of society…. …. and a feeling of accomplishment, self confidence, resilience, a job, a diploma, academic honors and awards, monetary rewards, etc.

  10. Graduation Requirements • 22 credits, including specific course requirements • High School and Beyond Plan/Portfolio • Culminating Project (junior year or senior year) • State Assessment: High School Proficiency Exams, End-of-Course Exams, and/or accepted options

  11. Graduation(minimum credit requirements ) The minimum courses needed for graduation from Olympia High School equal 22 credits: • 3 credits of English • 3 credits of Math - Algebra and above • 2 credits of Science – incl. 1.0 credit of lab science • 3 credits of Social Studies + WA State History req. met • 1 credit of Art • 1 credit of Occupational Education • 2 credits of Health and Wellness (.5 Health & 1.5 PE) • 7 credits in Elective courses of your choice

Opening the Doors of Opportunity For College preparation, plan to take: 4 years English 4 years Math (must take a meaningful math during senior year) 3 years Social Studies 3 years Science (2 algebra based lab courses, including chemistry and/or physics) 2 years Health & Fitness (.5 health & 1.5 fitness) 1 year Occupational Education 1 year of Art 2 years World Language (at a minimum ~ must be same language)

AVID – Helping Open the Doors • What is AVID? • A support class that helps “academically average”, MOTIVATED students develop the necessary work ethic, organization, and time management, test taking, critical thinking & study skills, to prepare for further education in a college or university. • It helps those who WANT to go to college, but aren’t quite sure how to get there, build their road to higher education.

Choosing classes/Earning credits Freshman year you will take the following YEAR LONG COURSES and earn 6.00 credits: 1.00 credit English 9 - Required 1.00 credit Math - Required 1.00 credit Science - Required 1.00 credit Health(.5) & Fitness (.5) - Required 1.00 credit Your Choice / Elective #1 1.00 credit Your Choice / Elective #2 Electives can be: Arts, World Language, and/or Occupational Education)

  15. Registration/Course Selection PACKETS (what you’re receiving today; you may keep): 9th grade Course Offerings Important Upcoming Events STAPLED FORMS (please leave stapled! Complete, & return to teacher no later than Friday, March 18th) Subject Selection Sheet Health Information form Leave these stapled! AVID Application (IF interested in applying – bring back separate from stapled packet!)

Subject Selection FormGeneral Information & Math • You are selecting year-long courses, so choose carefully. • Select courses that are best for you, not your best friend. • Take the most rigorous classes that work for you! • Math placement test and signature of your teacher is required for successful placement in Math at OHS. It’s recommended that you have an A or B in your current Math class to move up to the next level as a freshman.

  17. Subject Selection FormMusic and World Language • Music: If you select music, you will be guaranteed this elective. This meets the 1 yr. Fine Art requirement for graduation. Choose 1 more elective…. • World Language: Is not a graduation requirement, but is a fun, challenging course! It is recommended you have at least a 3.0 gpa and are ready for Algebra to enroll in a language as a freshman. Choose only 1 World Language course on your sheet.

  18. What can I do to prepare for high school NOW? • Attend school every day! • Complete every assignment and turn in on time. • Get help when you need it.

  19. Academically, high school differs from middle school in these ways: • Grades and credits matter! • Missing school has a more serious impact to your grade. • You are treated as a young adult who is responsible for your actions and decisions. • Students are expected to seek help and academic support when necessary. Ask for what you need. Use your voice!

  20. Daily Schedule • 6 classes - approximately 55 min long. • School starts at 8:00am and ends at 2:37pm. • There is a 10 minute break between 2 & 3 period. • Lunch is 30 minutes long and there are 2 lunches: one at 11 and one at 12. You are assigned the same lunch as your 4th period teacher. • Wednesday is late start - classes begin at 9:00 am, but study groups, tutoring and makeup tests are offered on that morning. Buses run on the same schedule M-F. Activity period is on Wednesday - get involved!

  21. Advice to Students: • Take the most rigorous classes you can throughout high school. • Check your grades and assignments through student access frequently • Maintain the highest grades possible. • Get involved in student activities and/or athletics. • Information will be available on OHS website and at the Activity Fair (Thursday, March 24th @ 6pm) • Develop clear goals for your future. • Begin networking with your teachers, counselor and those involved in your ‘future’. • Stay organized - use planners and calendars. • Learn to be resilient!

  22. What happens next? • Turn in the registration packet & AVID app. to your teacher by Friday, March 18th. • We’ll be back March 22 - 24 in computer labs. You will input your requests then. Students who don’t have their registration sheet turned in won’t get into the lab on Day 1! • A letter will be sent to you in late August with information next year and an invitation to attend the freshman orientation in September. We look forward to seeing you in September 2011. Welcome, 2015 BEARS!
