What are they? • An illness that involves extreme emotions and attitudes towards food and weight issues • Usually stems from depression or from bullying in younger people • Commonly appear in teen years, but can start in young adulthood • Affects both females and males • Treatable with therapy, medications, or rehabilitation centers
Four types • Anorexia Nervosa • Bulimia Nervosa • Binge Eating Disorder • Eating Disorder Not Otherwise Specified • EDNOS
Anorexia Nervosa • Characterized by extreme thinness and unwillingness to maintain a normal or healthy weight due to fear of gaining weight • People with anorexia see themselves as overweight even when they aren’t causing them to not eat • Anorexics will weigh a lot less than the normal weight • Common signs: • Dramatic weight loss, comments about being “fat,” excessive exercising, anxiety over gaining weight, and abnormal personality characteristics • Most common in females • 90-95% of all people diagnosed with it • Considered a mental health condition • Anorexia stems from the person seeing themselves as “fat” and their extreme compulsion for being thin • Can lead to many serious health conditions • Some include abnormally slow heart beat, dehydration, and dry skin
Bulimia nervosa • Characterized by episodes of binge eating fallowed by behaviors to undo the effects of the eating, or purging • Common behavior to undo the eating is forcing oneself to vomit • Many people with bulimia show symptoms of depression • Can lead to suicide in serious cases • Bulimics will have a normal or slightly less than normal weight • Common signs: • Evidence of binge eating, swelling of checks/jaw area, discolored teeth, calluses on hands from self induced vomiting, and withdrawal from usual activities • Most common in females • About 80% of all people diagnosed • Can lead to many serious health conditions • Some included electrolyte imbalance, tooth decay from stomach acid being released, and possible rupture of the esophagus
Binge eating disorder • Characterized by not being able to control how much oneself eats • Many people have frequent episodes of binge uncontrollable eating in a short amount of time then feel disgusted by their behavior • Binge eaters will have normal or slightly above normal weight • People with BED usually show symptoms of depression • Appears in females slightly more than males • 60% of all people are females, 40% are males • Can lead to health conditions • Some include high blood pressure, heart disease, and high cholesterol levels
Eating disorder not otherwise specified • With this type of eating disorder, symptoms and characteristics are similar to the other three, but not to those extremes • Still have emotional and psychological problems • Might not seem as extreme as other types, but the affected people will still need to be helped • Examples of this type: • Person has all symptoms of anorexia, but has normal weight • A person will purge without excessive eating
