Simulation • We all crash on a plane on the way to Spring Break. It will be 60 days before we can be rescued off our island. We will pick 5 students to create the rules (govt) we will live by. If the majority of the survivors don’t vote YES for the new rules, the 5 will be deposed.
What is a government? • The system by which a society makes and enforces its policies
Three Types of Power • Legislative Power • The power to make laws and frame policies • Executive Power • The power to enforce and administer policies • Judicial Power • The power to interpret and apply the meaning of the policies
The State- • A body of people living in a defined territory, organized politically that has the power to enforce laws without consent from a higher authority 4 Main Components • Population • Territory • Sovereignty • Government • Over 200 exist today
What does the term “origins of the state” mean? • It is the textbook’s way of saying, “What theories are there about why people agree to be organized?”
Origins of the State (Theories) Force Theory Evolutionary Theory A state developed through the family structure • Aperson or group claimed control by overpowering others
Origins of the State (Theories) Divine Right Theory Social Contract Theory When the people follow the rules of a state because they feel like the government has protected their well being • God chose a person to lead the state
What does the term “Purpose of Government” mean? • Reasons why a particular type of government was adopted. • Like an abstract for a research paper • Our Framers wrote ours in the Preamble to the Constitution
Purposes of Government • To form a more perfect union • Establish justice • Insure domestic tranquility • Provide a common defense • Promote the general welfare • Secure liberty Founding Fathers
