  2. Class Activity • Action: Write down the 4 or 5 points that most impact you from this presentation. You will need this for the group activity at the end of this presentation.

  3. Key to Learning • Maintain knowledge with regular 30-45 min study sessions every day. • Re-learn knowledge with a 12 hour study session prior to test.

  4. Why Do Repetitions Work? • Encoding and retrieving memories = Physical actions!!

  5. Encoding vs.Retrieval Practice • Once you understand the material: • Extra re-reading (re-encoding) doesn't help you. • Trying to recall it (retrieval) helps you remember it in the future.

  6. Practice Self Testing • What are the self testing exercises that you know?

  7. Retrieval Practice • Sketch what you know. • Bulleted lists • Concept map Put your notes and textbooks away first!!

  8. Retrieval Practice • Practice Tests • Instructors' supplementary material • Textbook publisher's website • Make a test for a study partner

  9. Retrieval Practice • Cue Cards • Definitions, formulas, *concepts* • Can assist in practice testing • Can assist in making concept maps Creating cue cards *is* studying!!

  10. Retrieval Practice • Teach an imaginary lesson • First with a lesson plan • Then try without assistance • With or without actual learners

  11. Whatever Methods You Choose • Always check your accuracy • After every recall • Even if you are sure Remember: Practice makes permanent!

  12. Boost Your Reps! Increase your recall repetitions in the spare moments of your day. • Very quick • Relaxed • Keep the pressure off • Shouldn’t feel like studying

  13. The Essence of Retrieval Practice • Testing yourself on a daily basis, saves you from having to do any special test preparation.

  14. Class Activity • Gather into two groups. • Assign a person to write for your group. • Assign a person to read the questions later. • Write 5 questions and their answers on the worksheet that your group agrees best tests participants' knowledge of this session. • You have 10 minutes.

  15. Class Activity • Group Challenge!!! • Each group assigns a participant to read a question. Teams take turns asking. • The opposing team has 1 minute to agree upon a response. A correct answer earns that team a point. • The team with the highest score wins!
