2. Personal Profile • Graduated from the University of York in 1973 with a degree in Politics • Started career in teaching • 30 years in police service • Retired in 2008 after serving in Northumbria, Durham and Cleveland • Live in Chester-Le-Street

3. My Vision “To achieve excellence in local policing and the highest levels of public confidence by working alongside communities and partners to address what matters locally”.

4. Outcomes that I want to achieve • Making local communities and the victims of crime feel empowered through: • Involving them in the design/redesign of local police and crime services • Listening to their feedback in the evaluation of service delivery • Defining services that match the needs our communities have identified to us - underpinned by my personal commitment to work with and for our communities

5. Outcomes that I want to achieve • Maximising the benefits of partnerships through the use of innovative shared working arrangements to tackle and prevent crime at its source. • Using our resources intelligently to ensure what we do is both efficient and effective.

6. My Personal Priorities • To reduce the impact of Domestic Abuse, particularly violence against women and girls. • To reduce the impact of Hate Crime • To improve engagement with local communities across the Constabulary area

7. Domestic Abuse • More than 1 in 4 women will experience domestic abuse often with years of psychological abuse • This is potentially 78,399 females across the Force Area • 12,899 in Darlington • 65,500 in Durham • The financial cost of violence against women and girls in the UK is £37.6bn

8. Domestic Abuse • I am personally committed to implementing the Government’s “Call to end violence against women and girls” action plan. Specifically: • Preventing such violence from happening by challenging the attitudes and behaviours which foster it and intervening early where possible to prevent it; • Providing adequate levels of support where violence does occur; • Working in partnership to obtain the best outcome for victims and their families; and • Taking action to reduce the risk to women and girls who are victims of these crimes and ensure that perpetrators are brought to justice.

Hate Crime • Targeting people because of their: • Race, ethnic origin, nationality • Religion • Sexual orientation • Disability • Gender identity • 71 average number of reported incidents over a 3 month period across Durham & Darlington • Doorstep campaign indicates high level of under reporting

10. Hate Crime • I am personally committed to: • Raising awareness and working with the Chief Constable to make it easier to report hate crimes and hate incidents • Making sure that the victims of hate crimes and hate incidents receive the best possible support • Working with partner agencies to make sure that we all respond effectively to hate crimes and hate incidents
