Barrier Structure blocking access • a structure such as a fence that is intended to prevent access or keep one place separate from another Something that obstructs • something that obstructs or separates, often by emphasizing differences • Impatience can act as a barrier to learning. Limit or standard • something considered to be a limit, standard, or boundary

Be Proactive! Your Success is Your Responsibility • Don’t wait for others to tell you what to do • Ask questions • Take initiative • Turn obstacles into opportunities • Stop blaming others • Remember, good is enemy of best • Surround yourself with positives
organize With Order Comes Increase! • Make your plan and work it! • Log your activities, including time spent • Keep track of all contacts – names, dates, notate discussions, ideas and results
network Who you know is sometimes more valuable than what you know • Reach out to old contacts and new • Focus on areas of interest and abilities
Be consistent! Persistence overcomes resistance! • Often the greatest resistance we meet is within ourselves. • Any progress toward the goal is still measurable and meaningful to results
evaluate • Throughout the process review plans, activities and progress regularly • consider an accountability partner for outside insights and reality checks • Tweak as needed
housing • Temporary arrangements can make a permanent difference • Location can make a big difference • Who you hang with can help you out or hang you out to dry • Consider all possibilities and their impact • Don’t let lack of funds keep you from applying - better to apply early than later
Family Affairs • Caution! Emotional mines and ambushes • Standing on your own doesn’t mean being alone • Your kids need you stabilized first • Rejected? You can start or join a new family • Relationship prior to restoration is dangerous • Keep your priorities straight • Give others time to see and accept new you • Friends are the family you get to pick
transportation • Locate close to alternative/public transportation – this might limit job opportunities but, getting “a job” is a start • Create a working budget for starting and future transportation needs – think economy • Find someone knowledgeable to help with the process of selecting and purchasing a vehicle. Always have a reputable mechanic look it over before negotiating or buying • Make it legal – include uninsured motorist coverage and renters insurance

Job Search Perspectives • You’re not alone – others competing • Turn failures into valuable life lessons • Promote loyalty as reward for opportunity • Turn set backs into comebacks • Let employers know you have less time to put in for retirement – no time to fool around • Every “no” is one less closer to “your” YES! • Always thank employers for their time and consideration, ask for referral to another job
Job Search Preparation • Utilize reentry services – case managers • Create multiple target resumes • Include all employment skills (even prison) • Minimize employment gaps with related activities (prison jobs, education, etc) • Do mock face to face interviews and calls • Target areas with multiple opportunities for making applications and getting interviews • Consider transportation issues
Job Search Process • Utilize old and new networks (registries too) • Maintain tracking for follow up and sharing • Pursue face to face contacts first, on line later, unless requested by potential employer • Dress for success, firm handshake, make eye contact, use contacts name in conversation • Show up early and ready to go to work (daily) • Target small businesses for easier access • Remember – your past hasn’t defined you, its refined you!
