How is sound made or created? Sound is created by the motion and vibration of air. Sound is produced when a vibrating system sets air into motion.
Acoustics The science of how sound is created and measured. We measure sound by “frequency” which is measured in hertz.
The science stuff A string has a length of xy. A vibrating string has 3 points of vibration, A, B, and C. soundwave
If we put these 3 points in order of when they happen, first to last, we will get 1 complete cycle of a soundwave. ABACA a = amplitude of vibration l = one complete cycle Complete cycles per unit of time = frequency
f = frequency l = length of one cycle of the soundwave, in seconds L = length of the string T = tension of the string, measured in Newtons m = mass of the string
Essential Concepts All aspects of an instrument have an effect on the “frequency”… Longer = Lower (length) Bigger = Lower (mass) Looser = Lower (tension)
Learning some Latin “Phonos” is latin for sound.
Aerophones Aero = air or wind Air sound Any instrument that creates sound through the vibration of air.
Chordophones Chordo = string or cord String sound Any instrument that creates sound through the vibration of a string.
Membranophones Membraine = skin Skin sound Any instrument that creates sound through the vibration of a stretched skin.
Idiophones Idio = self Self sound Any instrument that creates sound by the instrument itself vibrating.
Electrophones Electro = electricity Electric sound Any instrument that creates sound through electrical means. How speakers work-video
