  1. Speak Project How to survive high school

  2. Basic Guide • You may work with up to two other people. THE WORK DOES NOT CHANGE BASED ON NUMBER OF GROUP MEMBERS! • You will have several components that will need to be completed for credit. • ALL members will be held accountable and graded equally for all work done. • It is YOUR JOB to keep group members on task. • All parts of the project must be SCHOOL APPROPRIATE!

  3. Artwork • Any artwork from the internet MUST BE CITED OR YOU WILL RECEIVE A ZERO FOR THAT PART OF THE PROJECT!! • You may NOT use any images from the movie Speak! • Anything not done on PowerPoint, Photostory or Moviemaker must be PRINTED! If it has color, you must have it printed or created in color.

  4. How To Video • You will need to create a 4 minute HOW TO video showing various hints and tips for surviving high school. You will need to demonstrate each HOW TO tip you give. • For each HOW TO tip you give, you will need to create an opposite WHAT NOT TO DO. You will use specific parts and characters of the novel Speak to support your WHAT NOT TO DO. • You may use live actors or clips from other movies (NOT the Speak movie) to create your video. If you use movie clips, I will need a list of each movie the clips came from.

  5. Found Poem • You will create a Found Poem about one of the following topics: • Fitting in/ Not Fitting in • Being Alone • Sexual Assault • Being a victim • “Happy” High School  • Finding a voice • Fakes and Phonies

  6. Found Poem (con’t.) • A found poem is a poem created using only words and phrases from the text (with the exception of articles) • The words and phrases DO NOT have to be whole sentences or from related pages. • Make sure to look at the examples on LMS of Found Poems

Found Poem (con’t) • The poem must be logical. • It must be a minimum of 20 lines • The poem can be done as a creative Photostory OR on paper which has been decorated • On the last slide or on the back of the paper, you must include the page numbers you got the words and phrases from IN THE ORDER YOU USED THEM IN THE POEM.

The Ten Truths of High School • You will create a list of the Ten Truths of High School. • What are some of the “truths” of high school all incoming freshman need to know in order to survive. • These can be related to ANY aspect of high school. • You will need to illustrate all of these truths. • The images may be from clip art, websites or custom artwork.

The Ten Truths of High School • For FIVE of the truths, you will need to explain in two to three sentences why each is a truth using examples from your own high school experiences. • For the each of the OTHER five, you will need to explain in two to three sentences why each is a truth and then you will use various pieces of textual evidence from Speak as support for each truth.

  10. Your Choice • For the final part of the project, you and your group will choose one of the following: • Create a piece of art that represents something from the book (a theme, a character, a symbol, a scene, a place … etc.). • You can create a photo collage, a sculpture, a painting, a scrapbook …etc. (Check with me if you are unsure.) • You must incorporate at least two quotes into the piece. • NO PENCIL DRAWINGS!

  11. Your Choice (con.) OR • You will select two characters from the novel to describe. It CANNOT be Melinda. • For each character, you will compile a list of five nouns and/or adjectives that relate to the character. • These must be insightful word choices. You CANNOT use words such as mad, happy, sad, nice … etc. These are BORING and NONDESCRIPT. • For each word, you will write one to two sentences explaining why you chose that word for that character. • For each word, you will give a specific quote (with page number) that illustrates the description or describe a specific incident (with page number) that illustrates the description. • For each word, you will select a symbolic image to illustrate the word.

Word Example Melinda * Introverted * It is evident that Melinda is introverted because she keeps to herself and seldom speaks to anyone through most of the novel. * Melinda’s closet is an example of her being introverted. She finds an abandoned closet and she decides to use it to hide away from the rest of the world.   13. Due Date • Project Due October 18 • Presentations done the week of October 18-20 • Look carefully at the rubric
