Classification and Biodiversity Lesson 1. Principals of Taxonomy.
1 Minute Challenge. • Place the chocolate bars into 3 groups.
Taxonomy • What is taxonomy? • Linean system… • What is a taxon? • What are the 7 main taxons? Which one contains the most amount of species? Which one contains the least amount of species? • What are the 5 kingdoms? Give a brief description of each one. • Find an example of the linean system of classification for an organism in the animal kingdom and in the plant kingdom.
Defining a Species. 3 things to consider in defining a species: • Same species – if they are similar to each other & different from members of other species – can be physical, genetic , protein, behaviours • Same species – if able to breed together in their natural environment to produce fertile offspring • Different species of organisms have different ecological niches Combine these 3 to come up with a definition of what a species is
Hybrids • It is sometimes possible that organisms that have been classified as two separate species, can reproduce to produce fertile offspring. • This offspring is known as a hybrid.
Who was this man and why might he have changed things? • Linnaean System • Logical • Based on simple observations • No one came up with anything better • At that time people believed in “fixed species” • But…
Charles Darwin • Scientists realised that organisms could change • Started to ask where all the current living organisms had come from • Scientists started to construct phylogenies – lists or diagrams that showed evolutionary pathways taken by groups of organisms over many generations
