Solid & Hazardous Waste Management Nature does not hurry, yet everything is accomplished…
What we need to understand.. • What is waste? • Classification of waste • Sources of waste • Effect of waste if not managed wisely • Effective prevention techniques
What are Wastes ? The substances or objects which are disposed of or are intended to be disposed of or are required to be disposed of by the provisions of the law
Disposal means.. Any operation which may lead to resource recovery, recycling, reclamation, direct re-use or alternative uses.
Characteristics of wastes • Corrosive: these are wastes that include acids or bases that are capable of corroding mental containers, e.g. tanks • Ignitability: this is waste that can create fires under certain condition, e.g. waste oils and solvents • Reactive: these are unstable in nature, they cause explosions, toxic fumes when heated. • Toxicity: waste which are harmful or fatal when ingested or absorb.
Classification of Wastes • Solid wastes • Liquid Wastes • plastics, Styrofoam containers, bottles, cans, papers, scrap iron, and other trash. • domestic washings, chemicals, oils, waste water from ponds, manufacturing industries and other source.
Classification of Wastes [according to their Properties] • can be degraded (paper, wood, fruits and others) • cannot be degraded (plastics, bottles, old machines, cans and others) • Bio-degradable • Non-Biodegradable
Classification of Wastes[according to their Effects on Human Health and the Environment] • refused garbage, sludge, municipal trash. • solvents acid, heavy metals, pesticides, and chemical sludges. • Hazardous Waste • Non- Hazardous Waste
Solid Waste Solid waste is defined as any garbage from waste treatment plant, water supply treatment plant, or air pollution control facility and other materials, including solid, liquid, semisolid resulting from industrials, commercials, mining and agricultural operations
Hazardous Waste Hazardous waste is waste that poses substantial or potential threats to Human Health or the environment. It has a varying degree of danger to public health. It is the form of solvents acid, heavy metals, pesticides, and chemicals.
Sources of Wastes • Commerce and Industry Households Sources of waste Agriculture Fisheries
Effect of Waste • It affects Human health. • It affects our socio-economic conditions. • It affects our coastal and marine environment. • It affects our climate.
Let’s see how it is.. • Increasing amounts of hazardous waste have caused increasing health problems. • There are over 80,000 chemicals in existence, and many are used commonly in industrial processes. • Insufficient research has been done to provide data on the effects of every chemical. Because waste chemicals often mix together, it will also be necessary to learn how combinations of these chemicals affect human health.
Causal of increments.. • Population growth • Increase in industrials manufacturing • Urbanization • Modernization
Reduce Waste • Reduce paper waste • Work with customers to design and implement a packaging return program. • Switch to reusable transport containers. • Purchase products in bulk.
Reuse Waste • Reuse office furniture and supplies, such as interoffice envelopes, file folders, and paper. • Use durable towels, tablecloths, napkins, dishes, cups, and glasses. • Use incoming packaging materials for outgoing shipments. • Encourage employees to reuse office materials rather than purchase new ones.
Donate/Exchange • Old books • Old clothes • Old computers • Excess building materials • Old equipment to local organizations
Thank You… Manage yourself wisely,, then other things will be managed accordingly..
