Our Day • We have a rotating 6 day cycle with days A through F. • If we are out of school we skip a day in the cycle. - For example, if there is a snow day on an A day the next day is an B day.
ELA: English Language Arts *Reading *Writing *Listening *Speaking *Language
Reading • We will be using various reading assessments to evaluate students’ reading levels. • Fountas and Pinnell • LETRS • AIMSweb • Instruction will be given at the students’ individual instructional levels.
Key Reading Skills • fact/opinion • author’s purpose • predictions/conclusions • story elements • compare/contrast • identifying main idea, message or lesson and details • making connections • sequencing • making inferences • reading orally with fluency
Key English Skills • types of sentences: statement, command, question, exclamation • subject/predicate • simple & compound sentences • nouns: common/proper, singular/plural, pronouns, possessives • verbs: action/being, past/present • adjectives & adverbs • prefixes and suffixes • capitalization & punctuation • spelling
Key Writing Skills • persuasive, descriptive, explanatory • paragraph with topic sentence & details • poetry • compare/contrast essay • friendly letter • journal entry • sequenced story
NYS ELA Test • Tests students on reading comprehension and written response to text • April 1-3, 2014 • 3 days • Day 1 Multiple Choice and Short Answer • Day 2 Multiple Choice, Short and Extended Response Questions • Day 3 Short and Extended Response Questions
Social Studies Topics may include a variety of the following: • map skills • North America & United States (Mountains) • South America & Brazil (Rainforest) • Europe & France (Forests and Urban Areas) • Asia & Japan (Islands and Oceans) • Africa & Kenya (Grasslands) • Australia (Desert) • Antarctica (Polar and Tundra Regions)
Science Topics may include a variety of the following: • Plants & Animals • Water Cycle • Space (Sun, Moon & Earth) • Chemical Changes • Matter, Energy & Simple Machines
Math • place value • estimating/rounding • adding larger numbers with & without regrouping • subtracting larger numbers with & without regrouping • multiplication & division
More Math… • telling time • data & graphing • measurement (metric) • geometry • fractions • multiple step word problems
NYS Math Test • Test of math content from 3rd Grade • April 30-May 2, 2014 • 3 Day test (70 minutes per day) • Day 1- Multiple Choice • Day 2- Multiple Choice • Day 3- Constructed Response
Homework and Assignments • Homework will be given on Monday through Thursday. • Homework will be based on Common Core ELA and Math standards. • Homework Club will be offered Tuesdays, Wednesdays and Thursdays after school. • Class work or homework not completed on time will be done during a student’s recess. • Graded assignments will be sent home and will count toward the achievement score on report card. • We do not grade every assignment. However, there will be the number incorrect written on each paper, so you can monitor your child’s progress.
