Reflective Responding Reflective responding is helpful:-
To show that you have understood your client • When you need to find out if you are understood • To validate another person’s feelings • To enable someone to understand themselves • When someone needs help in expressing thoughts and feelings
When someone is trying to resolve a problem • To establish responsibility for feelings and responses.
Paraphrasing • This is similar to reflecting but usually more content is reflected back when paraphrasing and it therefore takes longer. • You may paraphrase at intervals throughout a session. Paraphrasing responses may be tentative, even questioning in tone.
They present the client’s experiences in a different way. • They do not contain the listener’s own views.
Some tips:- • State the main facts. • Use fewer words • Use different words • Use the same level of language • End with the main feeling
Summarising • The session can be brought to an end with a summary of the main thoughts, feelings and experiences contained in the session. • The summary is similar to a paraphrase but is sometimes longer. • The points relevant to paraphrasing apply to summarising.
It is useful for:- • Reminding the client of material that has been covered • Reminding the client of emotions that have been touched upon. • Keeping time boundaries gently. • Providing a link for the next session.
