Prevents Injuries & Saves Lives • A safe workplace requires a commitment by all employees. • Workplace safety is about people. • An unsafe workplace = pain & suffering. • A safe & healthy workplace must be our 1st priority!

Success? • Numbers don’t tell the story. • How do you count an injury prevented?
Remember this? • Section 3203, Title 8of the California Code of Regulations requires every California employer to have an effective written Injury and Illness Prevention Plan (IIPP). • To be Effective you must Communicate!
Your IIPP is a Communication Tool • It is the foundation of your safety program. • Provides Guidance • Provides rules & information. • Provides procedures.
The 7 Elements of an Effective IIPP • Designates a named responsible person • Provides a system of recognition & compliance • Provides a system of communication. • Prescribes procedures for identifying and reporting workplace hazards. • Procedures for investigating injuries or illness • Prescribes procedures for remedy of unsafe/unhealthy condition • Provides employee training & instruction
Responsible person • Named person responsible. • All of us are responsible.
Recognition & Compliance with safe work practices. • Everyone is responsible for their own choices. • Employer responsible for ensuring a safe work place and enforcing safe work practices. • Employees responsible for following safe work practices.
System of Communication • The DSR is the key • Provide communication of safety issues • Coordinates safety communications • Receives reports
Safety Meetings • DSR organizes and conducts safety meetings … monthly. • Safety meeting topics ( in order of priority): • Injuries since last meeting • Property damage since last meeting • Near-Misses since last meeting • Identified Hazards • What will we be doing in the next month?
Identifying & Assessing Hazards • You will receive reports of hazards • Reports can be verbal or written • Investigate reports immediately • Ultimately all must be written • Any reported hazard can be made anonymously! • Employees must be notified of identified hazards.
Identifying hazards in the workplace • What are the hazards in your workplace. • How do you identify them? • Reports from employees and public. • Supervisors daily inspections. • Formal scheduled inspections. • Immediate investigate all reported hazards • Communicate! - Look, Listen, Act, Report.
Investigation of Injury & Illness, Incident & Hazards • Investigate Immediately • Interview everyone involved. • To find cause and prevent reoccurrence. • Don’t pre-judge cause… get the facts! • Not a witch hunt!
Remedy of those Workplace hazards • Fix it or don’t use it! • Sound simple? • It is!
Employee Training & Instruction • Things change… New job, new tool, new process, we forget. • Train when things change. • Train to remind. • If you don’t feel safe in your skills or knowledge… Say so!
