“Virtualization & Storage Area Networking of Core Processing System” Tinker Federal Credit Union July 2009
About Tinker FCU • Located in Oklahoma City, OK • Over 400 SEGs incl. Tinker AFB • Asset Size = $1.9B • Members = 207,000 • 25 branches throughout Oklahoma
Background - Prior • Core system – JHA/Symitar Episys • Host – IBM p570 AIX • Long overnight processing – 5.5 hours • 600,000 transactions/day • 800 batch processes/day
Objective • Speed up nightly batch processing • Reduce time off host • Support CU desire to expand business hours for member support • Simplify system testing
What we did Team effort – IBM, Symitar, TFCU • Implement SAN architecture • Implement PowerVM at Backup Data Center (BDC) • Legacy configuration retained as contingency backup in Primary data center (PDC) • Update & Failover of LIVE system to new VM configuration at BDC • 30-hour LIVE test of VM system from BDC incl. all interfaces • Copy of new LIVE VM system back to PDC • Went LIVE on August 16, 2008

Configuration Summary BEFORE AFTER • Core system = JHA/Symitar Episys • Host = IBM p570 • O/S = PowerVM AIX 5.4 • Storage = • SAN IBM DS 4700 • 4GB Host Bus Adaptors (HBAs) • Brocade Fiber Channel Switches • “Goodnight” processing = 3.5 hours incl. 800+ jobs • Core system = JHA/Symitar Episys • Host = IBM p570 • O/S = AIX 5.4 • Storage = IBM SCSI 6x146GB disk array • “Goodnight” processing = 5.5 hours incl. 600+ jobs
Results • Faster overnight processing from utilizing VM – 45% improvement, reduced by 2 hours • Improved core system testing & reliability due to ease of creating & managing VMs • Expanded hours of service for members – now open 7am–8pm weekdays plus expanded weekend hours for loan processing
Results (continued) • Faster Disaster Recovery due to ability to create VMs quickly • Reduced security risk due elimination of backup tapes – all backups now via SAN • “Greener” data center due to reduced number of computers needed and reduced power comsumption • New cost-effective means for any CU to operate Symitar Episys core system
